0 Subject: On Self-Moderating in the Baseball Forum

Back when Guru started the Politics Forum, I posted the message below in anticipation of some of the types of posts I thought we might have to face (that it seems we are facing here, on this board).

It remains one of the few original contributions I've made to the boards, and so I hope reprinting it (with the minor tinkering I've made for this board) is taken in the spirit I want it to be. Namely, I don't want this post directed at any one person (or series of people) but I find that sometimes these reminders are helpful.

-------------------------

As a moderator, it's awfully difficult to try to determine when posts go "over the line" in this forum, or even where that line is drawn. By its nature this forum will be a magnet for heated debate on many levels and topics, often spilling over each other as we discuss economics, history, politics, sociology, race relations, voting fraud, and many other topics. Each of these topics invoke strong responses and counter-responses, and thrown together, well, it can get messy.

Each of us, then, bear a larger responsibility toward self-moderation in our posts, even in the heat of argument. In the first Yemen thread, it was heartening to see that many posters, despite strong responses, were willing to concede points (at times) but also to concede respect.

Rules of the road? How about these:

-Put down points, not people (a.k.a. slam positions, not posters);

-There's little need to make inflamatory statements in bold and large fonts. Make your points in argument, not in volume. "Bomb 'em all" or other such statements are subject to font and bold reductions if unaccompanied by explanatory text;

-We all make typos. Let's not make an issue of it. Sometimes moderators will go in and silently correct obvious typos, fyi.

-Given the give-and-take of this forum, it's natural to fire off a response right away. Take the time to read through your post twice before posting, to pick up typos and other errors.

-When referring to someone's earlier statement, give the post number in your response. Even if you respond right away with your post to something, there are always faster posters out there!

-Sometimes threads turn into extended discussions between 2 posters. Consider setting up a private e-mail correspondence, not to deprive the board of your comments, but to allow each person to develop their arguments more directly, in depth, one-on-one.

I'm not trying to censor anyone (well, maybe newcomers ;)) but just laying out some commonsense guidelines that might get pushed aside as we get caught up in the arguments. Well written, thoughtful political [baseball!] dialogue is in our best interest but we can only get there by taking responsibility for our individual contributions to measure up to that standard.

Thanks for listening.

see i'm down with that.i've said before, if you don't start with me, i'm not starting with you.
if you read my INITIAL post in richard's link..it contained no insults, just my thoughts on the equation (now proven right by madman)....
then the peanut gallery jumps in...and boo!
the last thing i'm going to do is take sh*t from a bunch of computer dorks who for as much time as they spend here, are not that good at making calls.....AND with no knowlege of the subject..just "tranceformer you suck"....
i understand people wanna take shots at me..
go ahead, its at your own peril..
if you know someone is meaner AND smarter than you, do you smack them? nope...same goes..just cuz its a computer it doesn't mean that i'm going lay off. a sucker is a sucker.
you are only helping me prepare verbally for my next challenge and i welcome it...people in real life are not quite so confrontation with me....that may be for a reason..
so if you hate me, you probably shouldn't feed me..
if you do, thanks
i appreciate the help

If you think you don't offend people with your first posts, then think again. Almost everytime you end a post you have an offensive statement. Boy you are ignorant.

Tranceformer, this thread is not an attack on you.

This thread is an attack on attacks. Whether it's "ganging up" on someone with whom we disagree, or those who slam because they feel slammed, it all contributes to a degradation of the board.

Those who slam second are just as responsible for their words as those who post first. With hope, though, those who might post second won't because they'll remember some of these "rules of the road."

PD - wonder why he thinks it is. Maybe he knows something about his posts that we don't. :)

Thanks, Perm Dude for the much needed reminder. Perhaps if we all listened a little bit more and lashed out a little bit less, this would be more fun for all (why else are we here?).

My guess is that there are some big time ulcers on the way which will eventually and painfully remind the flamers of your excellent counsel.

Then they will only be able to be fed milk. Something to look forward to!

simmer down, now!

If two people want to dominate a thread, I'll read if it has merit. And I'd rather come home at the end of the day and read a "today's action" thread written by a handful, than by none at all.

and heavy smack doesn't necessarily mean the poster is an idot. Superstar, Supersonica, etc...
Some of the greatest posters ever on this board could really put the freak on.

Yet if the poster wishes to make personal insults instead of subjective boats, he better be able to handle the heat.

Otherwise, ratings system sorta works, and it usually doesn't take that long to wade through the crap. It doesn't take long on these boards to learn the quickest way to glean the choice morsels.

Now, to talk about true and genuine self-moderation:

HAVE YOU SENT YOUR MONTHLY TOKEN TO GURU?

I'm also mulling joining the hoops playoff challenge, just to cut SW in a few bucks during their hour of need. Reguardless of their many faults, they have provided us an intriguing sport venue.

So let's direct our self-moderation where it's needed most, ladies.

Pilewort, I think that should be "simma down naw" (or should I say, "simma down naw, donkey head?" :)

Haven't you noticed a general lowering of the quality of the posts on this board, and a huge increase in troll-like posts? This thread was not directed at any particular person or any particular thread (though it was prompted by the Tranceformer thread).

Just trying to give a little perspective. I think we're saying the same thing, actually, just in slightly different ways.

Your point about SW is important. I think I'll click on one of their ads today. What a sacrifice!

you don't have to click SW ads, PD. They do it for you. ;}

general lowering of post quality? Absolutely. And life goes on.

Thanks for your efforts, PD.

It looks like Tranceformer was motivated to dig it up and bring it back to life. Not a bad idea IMO, the ideas still apply.
