0 Subject: The All-Ugly Team/HTML practice

Posted by: NCguy
- [494381616] Sat, May 20, 17:14

Use this thread to come up with the All-Ugly Team.

We will take nominations for each position, manager, bench players, etc. We can also practice posting pictures as well.

My first nominee is who else than the Big Unit himself.

steve h: Unit was throwing lefthanded, in my picture.

Anybody able to find a picture of one of my favourite players, Cliff Johnson?

Anybody remember Rafael Ramirez. I can remember laughing at his baseball card hysterically (85, maybe 86, Topps). He had the goofiest pseudo cross-eyed look on his face.

Boy, I don't know why when I first looked at Unit's picture, it looked like the ball was still in his right hand and the glove on his left. Looks clear now.

Nic one of Willie. I think his 86 Topps captured it best, but alas my collection is at my parents and I have no scanner anyway.

Needless to say, if this is an all-time team, someone's going to have to come up with a picture of Don Mossi, 50s reliever. There was a picture, and article about this specific subject, in Bill James' Historical Abstract (in which he, assisted by his wife, had all-ugly selections for every decade, and articles about some special players.)

Cliff Johnson was a sort-of catcher, started out at C but wasn't suited for it, actually played a few more games at 1B than C, and the great majority as DH.

Don Zimmer. Fabulous baseball guy but somebody please dig up one of his photos--Bill "Spaceman" Lee nicknamed Zim the "Gerbil". Thanks. BTW, he came up w/Dodgers as a SS in the Fifties and was also one of the innumerable 3B of the Mets.

Actually, Don Mossi looks pretty good in that picture. Rather distinguished. But you can see the ears. In the James article, talking about Don's face, he said something like, "The ears looked like something that had been taken from some other species, and sewn on without proper supervision."

Just take anyone from that phillies team that played the jays in the series a decade ago. Mitch Williams and John Kruk are missin a few genes. Id like to nominate Goose Gossage too. For present players...I dont know if hes still playing but you cant go wrong with Rod Beck.
This is off the topic but has anyone taken a good look at Tyone Hill on the 6ers, yeesh he makes Patrick Ewing look like Claudia Schiffer

NCguy--SORRY--I was unclear about Bill Lee--He was a LHP for the Red Sox. It was Zimmer who was the SS/3B. By the way for a catcher if you check out Andy Etchebarren (Orioles) he will win that spot maybe even the overall title!

Re Bichette: can anybody find a copy of that widely circulated AP (I think) picture of him last year (1999) when he came in for spring training? It showed him, shirt off, joking with Larry Walker. I mean it was gross. He must have weighed 260 pounds, I swear.

Ah, I love research! The picture I'm thinking of is probably ST 1998, not 1999, per this Sporting News article:

http://www.sportingnews.com/baseball/articles/19980306/59086.html

It's dated February 20, 1998...and I understated my case. Bichette bragged of "bulking up" 44 pounds from 218 to 262 in the off-season.

Now I think he may have been more like 280.

Maybe some of our newspaper friends can help me find that picture!

I think that Craig Grbek needs mention. He is definatley uglier than Morandini or could fit the utility infielder spot.
