What is most incredible about the Hammel-Harper incident was Harper's actions after he stole home and when he was interviewed after the game. He got up, dusted himself off and went right to the dugout. He did not turn around nor say anything to Hammel. Then after the game when he was interviewed,I am certain the reporters expected unprintable expletives from a 19 year old adolescent. However all he said when asked about Hammel was something to the effect: Good pitcher, great game. Harper will be fun to watch. Can anyone say Roy Hobbs?

I've watched Harper for a few games now and I think the kid gets it. Yes, he was a "rock star" at JC and when he first got drafted and yes, he wants to be the next Joe Namath (his own admission), but he also knows it's not going to happen just because he wants it to happen.

As a Nats fan, it's a nice change of pace from many of the players the team has had over the last several years. And not just because of his potential. If a team had 9 MLB-caliber players with Harper's heart, they'd instantly be a .500 team and any amount of skill beyond that would just add to their record. The kid gives the proverbial 110% so much that he's been surprising seasoned veterans on defense. Pushing for a double after a bloop over Jimmy Rollins?! Rollins clearly thought Harper would settle for a single and played the ball that way. Harper ended up at second because he showed more heart than Jimmy Rollins on that play. Not bad for a 19-year-old.

And getting even with Hamels by stealing home was pretty awesome... surprised his manager gave him the greenlight to be doing something so aggressive.

Wasn't sure about him (a lot of hype, after all) but the guy has a cannon for an arm and appears to have all the tools to match the hype.

It is a funny league, though. If he keeps his head straight and keeps the injury bug away he could be in this league a long, long time.

Nats GM Rizzo fined undisclosed amount for Hamels comments.

So Hamels plunks Harper and then later admits to it and gets what amounts to an extra day of rest. Rizzo then comments on what Hamels did and gets fined? Is that normal or is MLB just going over the top all the way around on this one?

We all know Hamels wouldn't have been suspended if he said the ball "got away from him." So, if Hamels wasn't "suspended", would Rizzo have been fined for his comments?

I doubt Rizzo would've made those comments then.

I love being rewarded for being a Nats fan when they were cellar dwellers. This team is really legit. Certainly they have holes in the lineup, but they're not that bad, and the pitching is top notch.

Harper is the real deal. His natural abilities should make him a superstar and if he continues to hustle this way, well, that would be tough to top.

As for the steal of home, apparently Werth had told him to time Hamels because he had a pretty slow pick off move. Harper also talked w/ Bo Porter (3B coach) about it and he encouraged him to do it, so though I don't know that DJ was on board, the coach was. And, yes, that was the best possible way for Harper to respond...you hit me, I'll score. Good stuff. Go Nats!

And every so often we'll be reminded that he's 19 years old.
