On Sunday night, December 26, in Philadelphia, Austin Aries beat Samoa Joe in a simply amazing title match, ending Joe's World Title reign at nearly-unheard-of-today 21 months.

i was there live, and the atmosphere in the building was incredible, with probably half the crowd rooting for Aries, the other half rooting Joe. it was not unlike Rock-Hogan at WM17.

the theme of the match seemed to be that the smaller, but more muscular, Aries couldn't get Joe off his feet. he kept trying, but couldn't quite lift him.

it got to the point that if he did manage to get Joe up, he'd win the match and the title, and that's exactly what happened.

the crowd popped like nobody's business when the ref's hand came down for the tree count. afterwards, none other than Ricky Steamboat said it was the loudest pop he'd heard in 20 years.

both men cried after the match. it was sight to be seen.

Afterwards, i partied with Austin in his room. He's a vegetarian. and drinks Twisted Tea. that struck me odd, but still, does not diminish his feat.

Neat stuff Tree----that atmosphere sounds incredible. And a nice topper to party with the new champ!

Mike - at some point, you should come to a show. it's some amazing stuff.

we were at an after-party (before the after party after party), and Aries was like "man, they need some real food here.."

i said "it's bar food dude. chicken fingers, awful steak strips, etc etc."

and he says "i'm a vegetarian. i ate all the garnishes. you'd think they'd have SOMETHING for us..."

definitely fun, and a bit scary, to party with wrestlers in their element. i'm friends with a few of them, but those that don't know you look at you with real distrust until someone you do know says "nah, he's one of us. he's cool"...then they open up and let you in...

although one of my personal highlights of the night was during The Carnage Crew/Maff&Whitmer match when DeVito of the Carnage Crew (and of ECW's Da Baldies) saw me sitting just past ringside, grabbed BJ Whitmer and shouted "Tree!!!!! this is for you buddy!!!" and clocked Whitmer.

yep. i'm a mark.
