oh man, where to to start...

i'd start by hitting up www.rohwrestling.com, reading match results, and scouring the message boards, but at some point today i'll post something somewhat indepth...

ROH is somewhat complicated with the heel/face dichotomy, but i'll give it a whirl after i list your champions, and what they've been involved in.

ROH World Champion - Austin Aries: the leader of Generation Next (GeNext), a group of young and cocky upstarts who stormed into ROH as a unit exactly one year ago yesterday, saying they were here to take roster spots and titles. Alex Shelley, Roderick Strong, and Jack Evans were the original members, with Shelley being the leader. But on the night Aries won the World Title (12/26/04, at Final Battle '04), he also led a beatdown of Shelley, ousting him from the group. GeNext are heels, but people love to cheer for them.

ROH Pure Champion - Samoa Joe: Joe is the beloved former World Champion, holding the belt for an incredible 21 months before losing it to Aries. He recently won the Pure Title by beating his protege Jay Lethal, who, in turn, had beaten John Walters a month or so earlier.

In theory, the Pure Title is on par with the World Title, but in the eyes of the fans it's a secondary title, due mostly to a series of second tier champions and mishaps, including the departure of the first Pure Champion, AJ Styles, while he was the champion. Styles has since returned, and I believe ROH put the title on Joe to help bring it up to par with the World Title.

ROH Tag Team Champions BJ Whitmer and Jimmy Jacobs: won the vacant tag titles in April, defeating Samoa Joe and Jay Lethal in what can be considered an upset, as Whitmer and Jacobs were a brand-new team, and Jacobs had never really been in any title picture, although the fans do love him. Whitmer had won the titles with then-partner Dan Maff, but Maff left ROH for personal reasons (and dont believe anything you read on the Web all the reasons people have speculated are untrue).

Other major players:
CM Punk definitely a fan favorite, although hes been a heel in the past, and with the impending return to ROH of vanquished rival Fallen Angel Christopher Daniels, it wouldnt stun me to see Punk go heel again. He recently finished an excellent feud with Jimmy Rave and the Embassy.

Jimmy Rave a member of the Embassy, a heel faction led by the dastardly Prince Nana. Originally somewhat of a joke stable, mostly because Nana is so damned good as a manager and absolutely hysterical on the mic, Raves feud with Punk helped people take the Embassy more seriously. other members include The Outkast Killahs (Oman Tortuga and Diablo Santiago), Mike Kruel, Fast Eddie, former Pure Champion John Walters (although he has taken a hiatus from wrestling over the summer), and the lovely Jade Chung. Nana treats Chung like crap though, so she may be preparing to leave the Embassy soon.

Homicide - leader of the Rottweilers, a heel faction filled with thugs, gangstas, and outlaws. Other members of the Rotties include Low Ki, Ricky Reyes and Rocky Romero (former tag champs), and auxiliary members Steve Monsta Mack and EC Negro, who have each appeared on one card each recently. Cide recently lost a vicious best-of-five feud with American Dragon Bryan Danielson, that was simply an amazing battle. Oddly, theyre cheered in NYC, mainly because theyre all from there.

American Dragon Bryan Danielson probably the best wrestler on the planet now. unfortunately, hes also soured on the business, and taking the summer off to reassess things.

Spanky - dont let his goofy and fun-loving antics fool you hes one of the top wrestlers around.

Jamie Gibson - formerly known as Jamie Knoble in the WWE, hes one of the top dogs in ROH, having been undefeated until finally losing in a World Title match to Aries.

Colt Cabana - Punks partner in the Second City Saints, he combines great comedy with solid skills, and it one of the most entertaining guys on the roster. Currently, hes feuding with Nigel McGuiness, his former tag partner, although currently its not a blood feud, more more of a rivalry.

Roderick Strong young up and comer, and part of GeNext. Known as the Messiah of the Backbreaker, and one of my favorite performers to watch. Nearly upset Kurt Angle during his Kurt Angle challenge series.

Jack Evans one of the best high flyers youre ever going to see. He also takes some brutal bumps, and has fallen off the top of a cage to the concrete floor below. Recently though, hes become an improved technical wrestler. He also kicks REALLY hard I know from experience.

Alex Shelley former leader of GeNext, has struggled to find friends since he was kicked out of the group, as no one trusts him.

The Ring Crew Express of Dunn & Marcos - Fan Favorites, they do an 80s rocker gimmick. People LOVE them, because they take some brutal bumps, but can also wrestle really well. Dark horses to hold the ROH Tag Titles at some point this year.

The Carnage Crew of Loc and Devito long-time fan favorites, but apparently made a heel turn by attacking Dunn & Marcos at the last manhattan show, brutalizing them and piledriving them through tables. Loc and Devito lost a multi-team match 3 months ago, where the losing team had to break up for 90 days. The team that pinned them? Dunn & Marcos.

Laceys Angels of Izzy, Deranged, Cheech, and Cloudy formerly the drug-taking ravers Special K, the business sense of Lacey has helped clean these guys up and made Izzy and Deranged Tag Title contenders. Theyre heels.

Azrieal and Dixie formerly of Special K, they broke off and became faces. They recently lost a match where they couldnt team anymore, so look for both guys to break out as singles superstars.

there's so much more, but man, theres a lot right there

lol -- yeah, bh. "Johnny Nitro" had a brief tenure as Bischoff's lackey on RAW last year, before sneaking onto Smackdown with Joey Matthews (known as Joey Mercury) to form the MNM team with valet/manager Melina. From the one night I saw, they're pretty good.

So who is Joey Matthews? And we knew John Hennigan was going to be good during Tough Enough. He can do a standing Shooting Star Press. He was also really arrogant, which probably suits his MNM character.

I guess Matt Capotelli hasn't done anything since the draw with Hennigan on Raw (someone interfered - was it Brock?). He'd make for a good feud with Hardcore Holly or Jeff Hardy but that's about it.

Still no word from Jonah or Scott, either.

Joey Matthews as been around for YEARS, even though he's only like 24 or 25 now. he started as a teenager, and along with former partner Christian York, had a pretty decent run in ECW.

both of them worked in Omega, which was the fed that birthed the Hardys, Shane Helms, Shannon Moore, and a lot of the smaller american wrestlers that have a high-flying japanese style to them.

he's definitely changed quite a bit in his looks, as even when he was a high flyer, he was kind of a chubby skinny kid, if such a thing exists...

here are some photos:
York and Matthews (Matthews on the right)

York and Matthews again (this time, Matthews on the left)

and of course, now, with Johnny Nitro (Matthews on the left)

Great One informed me that Matt Capotelli has been working in OVW and even feuded with Hennigan. So that's a third natural feud, which probably puts him ahead of Simon Dean.

i havent gotten tickets yet because alot of the shows are a possiblity for me. I am leaning toward the 6/12 show with the 7/9 & "The Homecoming" still a possiblity.

what are your thoughts on the 6/12 card so far?

Non-Title, Non-Sanctioned-
Austin Aries V. Lo Ki

ROH Pure Championship-
Champion, Samoa Joe/James Gibson V. Nigel McGuinness

Grude Match-
CM Punk V. Roderick Strong

NYC Street Fight-
The Ring Crew Express V. The Carnage Crew

Six Man Mayhem-
Jack Evans, ??? & ??? V. ???, ??? & ???

Ki vs. Aries should be amazing.

i've seen Joe and Nigel work a few times, and they're good.

Roderick is one of my favorite wrestlers, and Punk is just money.

RCE vs. Carnage Crew should be brutal.

but i'm biased. i haven't been to a bad ROH show...

thanks Species.

well, i offered my services to ROH, for the purpose of writing the bios and roster for the website, but booker is extremely adamant of not having bios and a roster, to the point that he's downright rude about it.

i've had numerous offers from pwinsider.com to write for them, from a column comparing my youth growing up in texas during the heyday of WCCW to the wrestling i follow today, to being their ROH reporter.

i turned down the first, because i felt like it was a cool idea, but one that would run its course fairly quickly.

i turned down the second because i'm friends with a lot of guys in ROH, and if i became a member of "the internet wrestling media", it would change things, because a lot of these guys are paranoid because wrestling is so political.

the supper club is a new venue, so i haven't seen it. if i were you, i'd get there early. for the other NYC venue, GA pretty much meant STANDING the entire show.

Yeah, I'd imagine GA wouldn't be too much fun in a small venue. But I could be wrong.

The front row was great. If we'd been any further left or even one row back it wouldn't have been nearly as much fun. Still interesting, but not as fun. And whoever thought to put tin signs within banging distances is a freaking genius.

I'm thinking about scalping for the ECW show next Sunday. The card doesn't appeal to me that much, but the venue sure does.

i may have an extra "Gallery Seat" for the show in manhattan. these are front row in the balcony that overlooks the ring, and are said to be the best seats in the house.

the ticket is 75 bucks "with merch" (an ROH T Shirt and DVD of your choice), or 50 bucks "without merch" (these are ROH's prices, not mine)...

the best part of all this is you'd get to sit next to me.

any interest?

several sites reporting -
CM Punk has signed a deal with WWE and will start shortly.

!!!
Tree - what does this mean? He will get stuck down in OVW where they will ruin his character and turn him into an average mid-carder or do you think he will debut on TV with character, attitude and presence in tact?!

They could do so much with this if done properly (I am reminded of when Y2J debuted and the impact of his arrival etc...)
I pray to god they use the AFI music - of course they won't and will write something crappy or give him a Creed song or something horrible like that, but ya never know!

i think he's got a shot at starting in the Fed immediately. i'll try and ask him about it tomorrow (i sold the ticket, btw), but it's tough to talk to him about his stuff. he usually wants to talk about everything BESIDES wrestling.

if he signs, it's great for him, but terrible for ROH fans. there were some amazing things in store for his character this summer...

i did chat with Punk after the show yesterday, shooting the shit about tattoos and stuff.

when i was leaving he said "see you next week..." and i laughed a little and said "i hope so!" and he laughed and said "Yea, i find out tomorrow (monday) if i'm drafted..."

i don't know if that was a cryptic way of saying he would legit find out today, or if he was making a joke about the Raw/Smackdown draft.

i do know he has definitely been offered a contract, and has a lawyer going over it...

Thats good to hear! I think all of us that have seen the product up close have been impressed.

Blue Hen and I knew pretty much nothing about ROH going in and still had a good time - and I think when we see it again will have even more fun since we are a little more familiar with the talent and characters etc..

I really wish I could go see this Aries vs. CM Punk match on 6/18 but my favorite band is playing their biggest concert to date the same night (Streetlight Manifesto headlines a Surf/Skate Festival on the parking lot stage of the Stone Pony in Asbury Park, NJ) I've had these tickets for months and I need to go support them too! 7/8/05 - Lake Grove, NY (on Long Island)
7/9/05 - New York City (Mick Foley on this show, as well as the Lake Grove show)

8/12/05 - Dayton, OH
