0 Subject: ECW - what to do?

Posted by: Tree

if early buyrates are any indication - and they are HUGE - ECW is going to end up being a brand on the WWE.

my guess is that it will replace velocity or one of those shows, but if such a thing happens, we need to give serious consideration on how, and if, we would incorporate a third brand into our little game.

That would have a huge effect, because people on our current rosters would be gone from RAW/Smackdown potentially. Wait and see I guess.

This.......is........Extreme!

Obviously it just depends upon the frequentness of the 'brand'. There wouldn't seem to be a TV deal available, so how 'consistent' per se would their appearances be? If it becomes a Heat/Velocity level, we don't score those shows currently, why do it for an ECW brand?

the difference is that Heat/Velocity is like a B show for Raw/Smackdown wrestlers.

an ECW only show could very well put a lot of current RAW/Smackdown stars on that show exclusively.

Not that my opinion counts for much with respect to the fantasy league, but I really don't see that happening. The ECW pay per view was awesome, critically and universally acclaimed, but it was billed as One Night Only. I really don't see any existing major Raw or Smackdown wrestlers going to an ECW show.

800,000 buys don't lie. that puts it, already, in the top 10 of all time WWE PPVs, and probably much more. Vince smells money like a shark smells blood.

this was written BEFORE the PPV got a buyrate about equal to Wrestlemania...

wrestling press box's smackdown > ecw proposal

after reading that - click on the top left link "Wrestling Blog" to see the details about how well the ECW PPV actually did.

I had no idea Smackdown was moving to Friday. Now I'll definitely never watch. At least now I watch about once a month.

Based on those roster at the bottom of his article, I can't say I'd watch ECW over Raw under any circumstances. It's not AL and NL. It's AL and American Legion.

Just imagine if they did an invasion angle (which has been done in the past with NWO and the ECW/WCW mess a few years back)--- but imagine if the ECW guys did it to Smackdown (and seriously, who is there to defend it now anyway!?) but the invasion was actually successful. Now that would be a fresh idea and a way to transition it...

You could even have a few guys in there like Batista trying to defend the WWE honor until its complete.

Definitely a fresh angle. I liked the WCW/ECW invasion angle a while back - was a fresh way to bring some heat. Having it actually WORK would be a great way to mix things up for a few months before (probably) "fixing" it at some "all or nothing" PPV that puts things right.

Problem I see is: Smackdown is the "Network" show, and thus would seem to need to be a bit tamer than the cable-based RAW. Thus, the things that made the ECW PPV so successful, and the promotion as a whole, might not play well on Network TV? You think a network would like a powerbomb through a flaming table? Barbed wire match? etc?

All of this is really weird. The current ECW invaders are the good guys and they put all the heels up against them. Kurt, JBL, Edge... and those are definitely the right guys for it. I watched every week during the Katie Vick debacle and now I barely watch once a month. Why?

It all stems from pent up frustrations dating back to your childhood.

That and the fact that Mae Young hasn't been on as much.

Well, if you go under the assumption that this was truly a "One Night Stand", with all of the ECW fans chomping at the bit for old ECW-style action, it made perfect sense to put the WWE heels in the middle to talk smack. Quite bluntly, it was pretty smart booking which only increased the excitement for the ECW at the expense of WWE heels --- which only helps the WWE heels in the long run because of that heat as well.

But if you were to continue an ECW angle, can you really have them be the faces across the board?

Good question. But the more I think about, the more I like the idea of an Invasion with the Invaders winning.

The good guys win so much these days. I really loved the McMahon-Helmsley days, where you really felt they had power and were in awe of it. I'll never forget when Hunter was in a tag match with the Outlaws and XPac and they all backed away when he tried to tag. They just don't have that same kind of excitement these days.

I blame Kurt Angle, the greatest heel who ever lived.

this ECW PPV is somewhat of a mea culpa from Vince.

back when the original Invasion happened, a large part of why it failed was because Vince refused to let "his" guys be seen as the bad guys or the losers in the Invasion, and thusly, didn't give the fans what they wanted.

This thread, the success of the ECW PPV and the last comment in the ROH thread (Mike D - best shows I ever saw were ECDub -- and I know I'd like ROH) get me to thinking, and we've gone through this before, but it may be topical again:

WTF is wrong with the WWE?

Arrogance? Writing? Too 'mainstream' for its own good? Too busy providing "Sports Entertainment" (focussing too much on the entertainment) to realize what the fans really want?

If fans went crazy for the ECW PPV - was it a sign of a groundswell of support for the style of wrestling or was it more a 'longing for the old days and characters' type of thing -- i.e. how cool to see the Dudley's in their old duds and style....how cool to see Funk in a barbed wire match, etc.

Then you have ROH which, according to the fans here, seems to thrive on pretty decent storylines and characters but keeps it fairly simple vs. spectactular (in terms of storylines) combined with a more 'in your face' style of wrestling.

Is the WWE essentially a victim of it's shift to a more mainstream and less hard core wrestling 'fan'? I never saw an ECW action figure of the Dudleys with a table at Toys R Us. Is Vince so spread out and commercial with his empire to ever 'go back' to a more hardcore style for the hardcore fan? If they do, he has a smaller group of more dedicated people....but as it is now he has a larger group of more casual fans.

The best thing might be to have it be a special even that is resurrected every so often. Thoughts?

A combination of things, but mostly the "too busy providing "Sports Entertainment" (focussing too much on the entertainment) to realize what the fans really want?"

Think back in Wrestling lore-----what sticks out for you? For me, the matches. The moves. The wrestling. I may remember "the way" someone spoke during interviews-----who can forget Randy Savage, or Don Muraco, or Roddy Piper?-------but I don't remember specific interview segments.

The ONLY exceptions are if something happened physically-----like Piper hitting Snuka with the coconut. Otherwise, none of it sticks.

It's the physical, no holds barred, grapplin' that got me into it. Along with the storylines that were developed through a small amount of talk, a big amount of action.

LMAO!

"According to different sources, the Voice of ECW Joey Styles signed a contract with World Wrestling Entertainment to provide work for upcoming Extreme Championship Wrestling material that will air on WWE 24/7 as well on DVD releases. On his website 1wrestling.com, Styles said, "Did I actually sign a WWE contract? I must have. A pig just flew by my 16th floor office window and hell just called to thank me for the snow."

Styles and WWE didn't have the best of relationships and once he even sued the company over some footage that aired on WWE TV involving him. In his commentary, Styles joked that Vince McMahon "didn't punch me in the mouth...yet" for his shoot comments during the ECW PPV and Shane
O'Mac who "looks like his dad" didn't punch him out either! It looks like he didn't meet Stephanie as he wondered when he gets to meet her! I wonder why!"

Now wait. I prefer the storylines to the matches. Especially the crappy matches. Some matches are good, but I'm a fan for the storylines and catch phrases. Matt Hardy called my ex-girlfriend an MFer. That was fun.
