0 Subject: WWE wrestlers....Behind the scenes

As a relative newcomer to all things professional wrestling, I'm interested in learning how things are handled by the WWE behind the scenes.

For instance, since most of the matches seem scripted (or at least the results are), is there a time of rehearsal for warring parties sometime during the week? Do wrestlers have any say on who they'd prefer to face? Does Eric Bischoff or any other General Manager have any real power or are they simply lackeys for Vincent K. McMahon? Who chooses who gets to be in the PPV's and at what sequence?

Furthermore, do wrestlers have to provide their own transportation, food, insurance, etc.?

I know these questions may be simple for many of you that have followed for decades but I haven't so please help this rookie out. Many thanks.

I'm sure you'll get many better answers in this space, but...

Bischoff is just an actor at this time. A good one, but an actor.

They do rehearse. In fact, their public appearances are also scheduled by WWE.

And, if you're married to Vince's daughter, you can be the champ for months at a time.

man. i could fill volumes here. but i'm going to bed in a few, so it'll wait for tomorrow.

of course, by tomorrow, thanks to a jerk in the political forum, i could find myself ejected from these boards, so tomorrow may technically never come for me....guess we'll see...

Checked the political thread and ever since I've been on a sprint through info on the PNAC.

Thanks for the ride and best of luck on NOT getting ejected.

a lot of this is all relative - relative to contracts, politics, and all sorts of other BS involved in the wrestling business...

i hate to talk too much on it, being that i've had the privledge (sp) of hanging out backstage and with a lot of wrestlers in Ring of Honor, and i really am just a fan. i'm not a wrestler, and while i do help them out when they ask, i don't feel i've earned the right to talk too much on a lot of things. i have a lot of respect for the business and the people in it.

that being said, most of your questions are common knowledge among so-called "smart" fans, so i don't feel as if i'm giving too much away, etc etc.

again, most things are relative. what is the situation for one wrestler, might not be the next.

in the WWE, it really is contractual. some wrestlers have everything paid for. some of less. almost none have health insurance through the WWE, and have to pay for it on their own.

on the indy scene, most wrestlers have a set fee+transportation. i've been on car rides with some of them, and i was stunned at how little money they make. guys i consider to be pretty big on the indy scene are making 300 bucks a night, plus transport. they still pay for their own meals, their own hotel rooms, and all that.

because of that, wrestlers either cram 6 or 8 to a room, or mooch off people like me. lol. i suppose i don't mind. when me and a few buds get together, it's like 10 to 15 bucks a person for the room. if 4 wrestlers wanna camp out on my floor for free, so be it. it's enabled me to establish relationships with some pretty cool people like Homicide, Prince Nana, Roderick Strong, and Jack Evans.

it's also enabled me to share rooms with Becky Bayless
and Jade Chung

...membership has it's privledges. lol

guys who aren't stars, are sometimes working for 50, 25, or even less a night. it's amazing to me.

wrestlers do work on their moves and stuff before the show. certain parts are scripted, other parts are spontaneous. if you ever hear the phrase "calling their match", it means that the wrestler is calling as they go.

sometimes, if you watch, you can see where one wrestler quickly says something to another. sometimes it's obvious, other times it's not.

as for the WWE and PPVs and who chooses what, it's all Vince Vince Vince. sure, he has some writers he listens to, and Kevin Dunn and Jim Ross are both powerful backstage. Triple H and Steph have a lot of pull obviously, and there are just some wrestlers Vince likes that he's going to push to the moon, even if they suck. that's why a lot of guys come up from OVW (Ohio Valley Wrestling - one of two WWE "minor leagues) with huge pushes, then disappear (think Mordechai)...

ok, i typed enough right there. i'm gonna eat my lunch now. :o)

I recall Randy Savage on a SF sportstalk show discussing the scripting. Outside of the ending (who wins) and perhaps a few spectacular things (i.e. - they specifically script a foreign object, or a finishing move they want included, whatever) "how you get there" is up to the wrestlers.

He discussed a story of matches involving Andre the Giant. He had pissed Andre off somehow during the week, so while he 'won' the match, Andre DEFINITELY let him know that he was not pleased with how some things had gone, and gave Randy a little extra beating during the match.

Though it's not as good as The Rock's (first) book, Kurt Angle's book It's True It's True talks about exactly that. How Christian talked him through one of his early matches. I always try to watch for communication like that during matches, but I hardly ever actually see it.

and a happy Kwanzaa to you.

on the subject of wrestling books, i REALLY liked Superstar Billy Grahams. it was a bit too heavy in regards to his christianity toward the end of the book, but other than that, it was a fascinating look at wrestling in the 70s and 80s, complete with sex, drugs, and oh yes, wrestling.

I enjoyed the Angle book a ton. Incredible the way he trained, and his descriptions of going to Siberia to wrestle were awesome.

Tree: I'd be curious about this comment is saw posted on ewrestlingnews.com (credited to some other source):

Many in WWE believe CM Punk's big push by Paul Heyman has gone to his head. Apparently WWE producer/agent Arn Anderson offered Punk some advice, but Punk blew him off.

He openly criticized the way the Elimination Chamber was booked. Like knocking out Punk/RVD 5 minutes into the main event and bait/switching Sabu was a bad idea or something - so what if the crowd and PPV audience lost the only guys worth cheering for - Test, Holly and Big Show is well worth the money! lol...

Punk is one of the most mellow, laid back guys i know. he also speaks his mind when it's warranted, and i don't think there is a wrestling fan alive who doesnt think it wasn't warranted after the abortion that was the Elimination Chamber.

Farn can't spell that well.

Orton will always be in the title hunt, and with such few choices at the moment, I think he's a good pick to have in there. He's built some heat too, which hasn't always been the case.
