Probably not something I should be "proud" of, but funny nonetheless.

Many of you guys know I have 2 boys....they're now 11 and 9. All three of us play video games. Amongst our favorite games over time was WWF Smackdown - Just Bring It.

Anyone who has played it, or later versions of WWE wrestling games, has the announcing style engrained in your head. Just Bring It was probably over-announced, and it's interesting to see how much the game producers/WWE tweak that aspect of their games. Anyway, in Just Bring It, Cole is the play by play guy with Tazz doing color. Each time a wrestler would do a finishing move, they'd typically say it rather enthusiastically twice...."The People's Elbow! The People's Elbow!!"

As happens to us all, games come and go, and games get thrown into the back of the CD holder, sometimes never to be played again. Well, the boys happened to walk in when I was watching RAW some night 4 or 5 months ago and we started watching together once in a while (and lately, every week), as well as playing the old video game. We would watch and "ooh and ahh" at the various moves, and when someone would get ready for their finisher, we'd announce it like the video game..."Figure Four! Figure Four!!"

So as we're watching lately we were seeing Carlito a lot. I remember my oldest asking "What's the big deal about the apples??", to which I shrugged and said something like "It's just his gimmick - it's funny, and at least it's unique".

So we're watching the week after the PPV where Carlito finds Flair in the back and they start brawling. Masters comes in and slaps on the Masterlock, resulting in my oldest saying "Masterlock! Masterlock!".....then Carlito beats him down and Flair's thrown to the floor. Carlito grabs the apple, and before he even shoves it in his mouth, my *youngest* shouts "Apple Spit! Apple Spit!" in PERFECT unison with the spitting of the apple. I spit out my soda cracking up at his comment.

Maybe it doesn't come across as funny trying to 'write' it down, but we were all rolling on the floor it was so funny.

Just as long as he doesn't apple spit at his mom, I think it's funny.

I could just see Species family on Nanny911 because of Carlito's apple spit- good times.

The fun you have with your kids does come through...and that is far more important than seeing the fun in what happened.

(and the announcer screams) FUNKID! FUNKID

lmao kev - Nanny 911. Good one....

.......but it does bring up a good point. I certainly don't really think that wrestling is appropriate for kids that age. We do skip over (we usually TiVo it) diva stuff so they're not seeing all the T&A (and Dad sneaks down later to check it out......yum). I'm sure to tell them that it's pre-determined as to who wins, and that they are all specially trained to do all of those moves so that the wrestlers are not hurt as bad as they might think. A chair shot is real - but a tombstone piledriver is executed in a way that does NOT drive one's head into the mat. A Pedigree hurts but is not driven down with the force you'd think, etc. And of course, you never, EVER, will get away with that kind of aggresive behavior at home or in school, etc.

I do try to focus on the "sports entertainment" side - how their job is to make everything LOOK spectacular. But still, in the grand scheme it's something I feel a little guilty about and hope my talking to them comes through.

FWIW, my kids---well, my son---plays the videogames with me. But I don't let him watch the shows and I won't take him yet. He's 10.

Funny stuff though---some VERY young kids can be seen in the crowds on tv or at live shows.

Wow, amazing how wrestling has changed. Back when I was young, there was very little objectionable content. I mean some violence, sure, but nothing like the stuff today, and there was very little sexual inuendo or content.

The video games have gotten much worse on the sexual content. In "Smackdown vs. Raw", in career mode one of the angles they've taken is to win the services of a valet. A diva starts to flirt with you and in one case our wrestler got a rather innuendo-filled back massage that was almost like a reverse lap dance! There is a 'bra and panty' match option as well.

....and on TV, the girls almost always have their jugs sticking out and asses visible. Not that there's anything wrong with that from MY perspective, but definitely not for the kids. I also don't like any violence against the divas by the men - although that is not exactly common.

How cool would it have been though, after beating up some kid on the playground you had your apple with you and spit it on them! ;-)

Oh man, I think the apple spit is the new greatest thing. Next time I play a pick up game of basketball, I'm bringing an apple, and when I bring down the thunder, instead of trash talking, I'm apple spitting. Especially against the guy who does the "You can't see me" after draining a 3....he deserves Apple Spit.
