0 Subject: Gurupie ROH Outing in NYC

Tree, GO and Blue Hen in the house down at the Chelsea Piers for Ring of Honor in NYC. Very good show (including Lance Storm). We all wound up with first row tickets... Steel Cage Warfare was absolutely ridiculous. And we have officially learned that Jack Evans is insane.

Maybe Tree can explain the two big spots he did cause I can't believe what I saw.

Ring of Honor debuted at its new Manhattan venue, Basketball City at Chelsea Piers, last night before a crowd of over 800.

Jason Blade/Kid Mikaze defeated Dunn and Marcos with a top rope moonsault in about 10 minutes.

Davey Andrews defeated Pelle Primeau in about a minute. Following the match, Ricky Reyes came out and destroyed Primeau, Andrews, and other students, as well as the Top of the Class Trophy!

Tony Mamaluke/Sal Rinauro defeated Colt Cabana/Milano Collection AT to retain the ROH Tag Team Titles. Exitenglish said that Mamaluke and Rinauro hit their double team finisher and dropped Milano right on his head!

Bryan Danielson defeated Rocky Romero with a Single Leg Crab in about 17 minutes to retain the ROH World Title.

After the title match, Lance Storm came out. He and Danielson paid respect to one another, and Storm hinted at having one more match in him. The crowd then chanted "One More Match" at Storm.

Jay Lethal defeated Samoa Joe in about 20 minutes with a Dragon Suplex. During the match Lethal attacked Joe with a steel chair, apparently completing the heel turn.

Steve Corino defeated Homicide after a masked man came in and attacked Homicide in a match with a ton of weapon spots.

Steel Cage Warfare:
Generation Next (Austin Aries, Jack Evans, Matt Sydal and Roderick Strong) defeated The Embassy (Abyss, Alex Shelley, Jimmy Rave, and Prince Nana)

Eliminations:

Matt Sydal was eliminated at about the 25 minute mark after a Black Hole Slam from Abyss, and a Pedigree from Jimmy Rave. I believe Rave got the pin.

Abyss was eliminated by Jack Evans at about the 35 minute mark with a moonsault off the top of the cage! When Evans entered the match, he hit a DOUBLE FLIP MOONSAULT OFF THE TOP OF THE CAGE onto the Embassy members still on the floor.

Jack Evans was eliminated by Alex Shelley after a move off the top rope. This was a minute or two after Evans eliminating Abyss. Shelley's move was some sort of a slam.

Jimmy Rave was eliminated by Roderick Strong with the Strong Lock after about 5 backbreakers.

AT THE SAME TIME... Alex Shelley was eliminated by Austin Aries with a brainbuster on a chair, and Prince Nana was eliminated by Austin Aries after a 450 from the top of the cage! Generation Next wins the match with Strong and Aries being the survivors!

He definitely didn't mean to break the trophy, but it was one of the night's highlights.

Lance Storm looked really big.

The first flip was probably the most amazing wrestling feat I've ever seen - there were no mats on the ground - it was a hardwood floor.

I read on the ROH boards someone trying to describe the second flip. Maybe Tree wants to take a stab at it since he was closer.

Try and picture this.

Rod Strong climbs to the top rope (think Undertaker Old School) but with Jimmy Rave on his back in a Torture Rack. So we have Rod on the top rope kind of teetering there, leaning on the cage a bit with Rave up on his shoulders. He is halfway between the two corners.

Jack Evans ascends to the top of the cage in the corner. He takes a step or two across the top of the cage and then jumps and plants both feet ON TOP OF RAVE and then from Raves chest does a moonsault into the ring on top of Abyss.

The first double moonsault (top of the cage to the outside) was certainly good but its something we have seen from Jack on multipe occasions and despite there being no mats he still landed on a crowd and that helps cusion the blow.

I think the degree of difficulty on the second was much greater - literally jumping on top of another guys chest that high up in the air (who surely was covered in sweat and not too stable himself since Rod was holding him and just trying to balance himself) was just insane. Had he slipped he would have fallen the entire length of the cage to the floor or into the ring if he was lucky. Basically a lot less control of the situation.

I hope Mary Kate got some good pics of all the different spots.

Corino vs. Homicide "ton of weapon spots" ?! lol...

How about Homicide shredding Corino's ear open with a FORK! Barbed wire wrapped chair... pretty wicked table bump. Even the ref bladed right in front of us after a chairshot lol...

I read that Homicide seperated his shoulder.

Jack Evans, first move was a double moonsault off the cage to the guys on the floor. Jack is sick. i really hope he retires that spot, because it's just too dangerous.

the second move he did with Roderick Strong is called "Ode to the Bulldogs", which is a tribute to the British Bulldogs, a favorite team of both Strong's and Evans'.

normally, the move consists of Roderick having an opponent in the torture rack, Jack jumping from the top rope onto the guy in the torture rack while sort of turning so now his back is to the ring, then moonsaulting to the guy below.

in this match, it was the same move, except Evans leaped from the TOP OF THE CAGE, and Roderick was standing on THE TOP ROPE with Jimmy Rave hoised onto his shoulders in the torture rack.

it was amazing, and fairly death-defying because Roderick didn't have as good a grip on Rave as he'd have liked. i talked to him afterwards, and he said his bad shoulder was hurting, and that was the cause of it.

it was the most amazing tag team spot i've ever seen.

that is the vomitous joy that is Steve Corino's ear. i was majorly grossed out.

Homicide's injury was actually a deep, deep bruise to his AC joint. the reason he hopped up so quickly after the match was because he knew he was hurt badly, and needed to go to the hospital. Homicide is one tough dude, so when he goes to the hospital, it's the real deal.

more pics, of Jack Evans' insanity. Mary Kate didn't get as many great pics as i would have hoped, but with the way Evans' moves, that doesn't surprise me.

midway through his doublemoonsault from the cage to the floor:

finishing up the "Ode to the Bulldogs" move (notice Roderick Strong in the background, on the top rope, with Jimmy Rave on his shoulders - Evans leaped from the top of the cage onto Rave's chest, then flipped off of him, onto what you see here):

believe it or not, he managed to rotate in mid-air just after that, and land mostly on Abyss (to the right), and only barely land on Austin Aries (one of his partners, along with Strong, and Matt Sydal)

What was that finishing move that Kenta did?! That was ridiculous. I had a perfect view of it.
It looked like it was gonna be a Gutbuster (i think) where you throw a guy up and he lands on your knee... but instead he threw him up and then jumped and drove his knee up into LowKi's face.

That match was just insane.

that move was sick. one of the sickest things i've seen.

someone on the ROH boards referred to it as a Busaiku Knee Kick. i'll continue to refer to it with what my reaction was when he did it, which was "are you f*cking kidding me?!?!?"

KENTA

Tree (and everyone else :)

I found a video with KENTA doing those two moves we tried describing lol... his finisher is at about the 2:35 mark. Not great views of it, but you'll get the idea. He tosses you in the air and then gives a jumping knee to the face... gorgeous.

sure, not as good as a live sex show or the boogeyman, but what is?!

i'm ready for Philly, but i'm trying to find a way there...my night vision kinda sucks, so i prefer to not to drive late at night (and my wife - oh yea, i got married last week, btw...heh - doesn't want me to drive either, as she can't go to this show)...so, i'm looking for a ride.

i always sit GA for Philly, because those seats rule. and since i'm usually inside a bit before everyone else, i usually get my pick of the seats, sitting top and center. :o)

as for Chris Hero, he's probably number one on the list of wrestlers ROH fans have wanted to see in ROH, but he's never come in for reasons that are unknown, but the subject of many a joke.

apparently, he just doesn't want to work ROH, so bringing him in in the manner they are doing so is brilliant, with the "i am gonna win your World Title and take it back to my home fed" angle.

he's also Claudio's main trainer...

So they have this kayfabe fued with Combat Zone Wrestling (the hardcore organization)... good stuff. Tree, they used a weedwacker? lol... I read about the panes of glass and weapons etc., but thats good. And Zandig spraypainted everything?

from Gabe (the booker of ROH) they are turning this into a "war"... imagine if WWE did the ECW invasion this well! There is gonna be a legit freaking riot cause these two groups of fans really don't like each other either and I got front row!

I've had enough. Our debut show at the former ECW Arena was completely ruined by those CZW idiots. Weedwackers? What the **** is that? The ROH roster is made up of real wrestlers, athletes who don't expect to get hacked. Our guys go to PPV and national TV, they don't need to show up with scars from a weedwacker.

So then I get a call from BJ Whitmer after the CZW show saying Zandig was talking trash about April 22nd. Hey Zandig, you owe us $3000 for a new canvas and banners you stupid ****. What the **** was with the spray paint.

I could sit here all night and rant and rave but i'll just sum this up simply.

The gloves are definitely off now. We have been having our fun with you guys, but now you are making us get deadly serious. April 22nd ROH has a show back in our Philadelphia home of the National Guard Armory. We challenge anyone from the CZW roster to show up for a fight. You bring a team to face team ROH.

We'll even make things seem a little like home for you. On April 22nd we will have bleachers on both sides of the ring. One side for the ROH fans. One side for the CZW fans. The CZW fans will be made at home in their own section so you guys will have plenty of support. Now the question is do you have the balls?

You got our attention now. You ruined our debut and only former ECW Arena show. April 22nd show up because it's time to pay the price

dude, it was crazy in that building last night.

and yes, Wifebeater ran down with a weedwhacker, which is something CZW used years ago in an angle where one wrestler was handcuffed to the ropes and another used a weedwhacker on his back, then poured lemon and salt in the wounds.

the end of the ROH part of the show, which saw the CZW wrestlers charge in, with the weedwhacker and a barbed wire baseball bat, was just nuts. the ROH guys turned tail when the weapons came out, and Samoa Joe fought off the weedwhacker with a chair.

BJ Whitmer ended up in the ring alone with about 30 guys, and they taped him to the ropes, stapled - yes, stapled - CZW flyers to his head and body, and racked the bat slowly over his bat.

some of the CZW guys then began dismantling the barricades, and shoving the ROH fans, challenging them to fight. it was just insane.

one of the most entertaining moments came when some guy threw a roll of toilet paper at Joe, hitting him squarely in the chest. Joe, glared at the guy, then went over the ropes and into the crowd.

as soon as the Joe went over the ropes, the guy ha a legit look of fear on his face, and tried to run out over the chairs, but was slowed by other other fans.

Joe caught up with him, grabbed him, and handed him over to security, where one of the main security guys literally carried him out of the building.

screw the NWO/WCW Invasion and screw the ECW/WWF invasion..*this* is how it's done.

some first hand accounts in case my crappy explanation didn't get the feel of what actually is going on in this...
from the ROH boards
I read what others at the show last night said about the ROH/CZW brawl, and just had to submit my own experience from the front row. It was hands down one of the craziest things I’ve ever seen in wrestling. As soon as BJ and Joe called out the CZW guys the whole place went nuts. CZW guys came flooding in, ROH guys came flooding in…they were brawling everywhere, in the ring, on the floor, in the crowds. Then, this buzzing sound started to fill the air and all of a sudden the ROH guys started running right past me, out the front door into the parking lot. It was wild seeing guys like Christopher Daniels running and hoping over the guardrail as fast as he could go. Next thing you know the ring is full of CZW guys with a weed whacker, barbed wire, staple gun, and hammers. They’ve got BJ and are stapling bills on his forehead, stomach and back. It was sick. CZW fans who’d been waiting outside start pushing in, getting into it with ROH fans. The CZW “security” guys start bringing out beer (which is being spilled and thrown everywhere), and Necro gets the bright idea to start ringing the bell with his hammer as loud as he can. Super Dragon took an ROH shirt from some guy in the crowd and used it to choke out BJ, while other CZW fans are trying to rip the ROH signs off the guardrails. Meanwhile someone took the ring bell away from Necro who then starts hammering the table until it cracks, then realizes that he can make a really LOUD sound by hammering one of the ring posts. One entire section of guardrail got knocked over into the floor, and some of the CZW fans had pocketknives and were trying to cut the ROH signs off the other guardrails. I finally bailed when Necro came running at my section with his hammer, lol.

Definitely one of the most unforgettable ROH moments in my experience.
and this one
Despite the unfavorable outcome, I loved every minute of the closing angle with CZW. That was the most heat I've ever experienced at a live event, as well as some of the most well executed work. From Super Dragon ripping my friends ROH shirt out of his hands and choking Whitmer with it, to the barricades being ripped down and even Maven Bentley storming around ringside demanding we all clear the building, it was one of those few times were you're just caught up in the moment as a real fan, and not as someone trying to critique every last detail. I hope it comes across on tape as well as it did live, or at least close to it, because it was a really magic moment to be involved in.

And if just a few people were legitimately scared of what went on yesterday afternoon, then you know it was a complete success of an angle.

So Tree, you have a picture of Briscoe's chest yet? :) I have been watching wrestling for what - 10 years now? Roderick Strong. I have NEVER witnessed a single chop THAT hard, THAT loud and Briscoes chest looked like he popped blood vessels or something.

Sweet music video of AJ Styles vs. Matt Sydal from Hell Freezes Over in Philly. After that match I remember thinking - that was freaking amazing and it wasn't even something on the card I was looking forward to. Some CRAZY technical and aerial moves in the last 2 minutes of this video (only 5 minutes long so it won't take up much of your time, don't worry) including Sydal's moonsault into the crowd from the ring (think RVD's famous ECW spot).

GO - i'm absolutely retarded for not calling you. where were you sitting?

Briscoe's chest was ground beef. it was really nasty. after the match, he showed some people his chest, and you could see Roddy's handprint, in bruise!

for my money, the match between the Briscoe Brothers and Roderick Strong/Jack Evans was the best tag team match i've EVER seen in ROH. The main event was super, and probably the second best i've ever seen, but Roderick busting out a standing moonsault and that SICK Ode To the Bulldogs Phoenix Splash that the won the match with was wild!

i also really liked the SHIMMER match. probably the best woman's match i've ever seen live, and it was fun watching my girl Allison nearly jump the rail to go after a jerk sitting right behind me...

I would say the Briscoes vs. Roderick/Evans WAS indeed the best tag match I have ever seen. It was just "ooohhh!!" and "ahhh" one after another... it was hard to keep up! lol

I must have been in the same area as you, what did that guy say to Allison? She was ready to kick his ass.

I'd have to agree with this guy about the match too from the review/thoughts/opinions section :)

The SHIMMER match was a great match, and i think Mercedes Martinez in the end even though she did not win, she left an impression in the fans' minds that she is that good. I would not be suprised if ROH books her again in the near future.

Let me second this thought. the SHIMMER match was off the charts, and i'm sorry, anyone who thinks women's wrestling sucks after seeing this match, simply is unable to get past their own biases.

Just wanted to make sure he was ok. That looked brutal. So did Delirious' hand. When Danielson was about to superplex him off the top rope he was staring at his hand and screaming and looking scared at the sight of his own blood "ahh... blood... blood!! ahh..." (in English!). lol...

So is this legit or just storyline (BJ, not Pearce, I could visibly see the cut on the back of Pearce's head, it was pouring out blood like a fawcet)... I guess that fact that I am unsure means they did a good job :)

I know Delirious also went to the hospital for that hand.

April 23rd: Both Adam Pearce and BJ Whitmer were forced to go to the hospital after last night's chaotic main event. Pearce needed 12 staples to close an "H" shaped gash on his head as a result of a Necro Butcher chairshot. Whitmer's injury was even more serious as it is believed he suffered a very bad neck injury at the hands of Super Dragon and the Psycho Driver from the ring through a table. Whitmer felt tingling in his left arm. Both Pearce and Whitmer are listed as doubtful for next week.

I can't believe he wrestled the entire match that way. Blading is one thing - and more or less seems to be something you have control over - but the back of your head gushing blood because you whacked it on something you didn't intend to (like the concrete floor, or the ring post or guardrail or whatever) thats just brutal...

We wound up with Homicide vs. Necro Butcher and every single person in the crowd throwing their chairs into the ring (on top of Necro!). Yes thats been done before. Thats how you usually end it ala ECW. BUT no... the fight went on! Homicide and Necro proceded to fight and do big spot after big spot wading through the chairs and and into the piles of chairs and through tables etc.
