and I almost got tix for tonights show, damn it!

Tonight at the SmackDown television taping in Philadelphia, Batista’s torn right triceps forced him to relinquish the World Heavyweight Championship over to General Manager Theodore Long.

Long immediately declared that there would be a Battle Royal tonight to determine the new World Heavyweight Champion.

Kind of a crap way to do it IMO. They should have had like a 4 way between JBL/Beniot/Orton and.. whoever else.

Kurt Angle wins the World Heavyweight Championship
January 10, 2006

Kurt Angle won the World Heavyweight Championship tonight at the SmackDown television taping in Philadelphia.

In one of the most shocking moments in recent SmackDown history, Angle, who was last seen teaming with Shawn Michaels on RAW Monday night, walked out from the locker room area and into the SmackDown ring to compete in the Battle Royal ordered by General Manager Theodore Long.

The addition of Angle to the Battle Royal clearly caught many Superstars off guard, and he became an immediate target of the SmackDown roster. In fact, Mark Henry even threw Angle through the announce table at ringside. Angle was able to withstand the attack, however, and in the end Angle last eliminated Henry to be crowned the new World Heavyweight Champion.

Afterwards, Angle celebrated in the ring while the audience in Philadelphia looked on in total amazement.

Of course, the crowning of a new World Heavyweight Champion was ordered after an injured and emotional Batista was forced to surrender the title earlier in the night due to injury.

You mean TODD shane. LMAO!

I LOVE the Angle move! Shocking is right! Which is a great thing. AND a legit champ who has a big following (both for and against him) and great skills. Terrific move.

the smackdown locker room must be thrilled to know the WWE thought so little of them they brought in someone from raw to win their belt. Another stupid move in my opinion

wiggs has a point, although I love Angle with a belt....but it has to stay on Smackdown. If that's the case, as has been commented on in some columns, with Angle NOT beating Cena for the title, some of his (pardon the pun) angles for future feuds were running thin. Now they can do a new, slighly fresher set of angles for Angle on Smackdown.

Why wiggs? Who would you have given it to? JBL (zzz--again)? UT (back from the dead)? Mysterio (too small). Orton (young, no real heat yet)?

Seriously---just wondering who you'd have made the champ.

Benoit is the only legitimate option if you Undertaker can't wrestle fulltime. You can't put it on Lashley. If you did that would cause serious damage in that lockerroom.

Rey is too small. Maybe over time he could take the title but not yet.

Forgot Benoit. Agree he would have been a great option. BUT----it works if Benoit acts pissed and becomes the rabid wolverine again and starts some more classic matches with Angle.

....and Benoit is in the midst of a US Title Best of 7! THAT would look lame!

Smackdown is seriously F'd right now.

No, cuz that's about to end----I bet Booker retains, after Orton wins it for him, and Booker OWES Orton big time.........with a title defense! And Benoit is free to get Angleized.

1. i woulda put it on Rey. even as a transitional champ, Rey would have energized the title scene. there was a time, not too long ago, when Chris Benoit and Eddie Guerrero were "too small" to be World Champs, and quite frankly, they're the most memorable WWE World Champs of the past 5 years.

2. or, i would have scrambled, made amends with Brock, and brought him in. Him winning the title would be shocking.

i hope what this does lead to is the end of the Brand Extension. at one time, it might have seemed like a good idea, but the WWE Talent roster is just too thin at the top. people have claimed this for quite some time now, and these injuries prove it.

the problem is that the WWE doesn't develop mid card guys well at all. sometimes someone slips through the cracks, but the minute an RVD or a Shane Helms or a Eugene starts to ride to Main Event status, they do something to bust them back down, and they lose credibility.

to me, there are two fundamental things that lead to this:

1. Vince's near-homosexual love of muscular guys. I'm sorry, but from Lex Luger to Chris Masters, Vince's love of a certain look is pretty close to queer. the problem is, often, these guys can't wrestle. but, because Vince loves them, they get pushed. there are some exceptions, like Carlito, but again, he's the exception.

2. Vince's desire to fix what ain't broke by creating new characters. with the exception of MNM, and possible a few others, the WWE has taken guys that kicked ass - i mean absolutely kicked ass, either as characters or wrestlers or both - at the level just below the WWE, and re-invented them, or buried them.

Antonio, Romeo, Shawn Daivari, both Bashams, Eugene, Spanky, Paul London and the Dicks (who were GREAT heels as the Tolands in OVW), are the guys that come immediately to mind.

they are making some right moves. MNM should be champs - and they should be feuding with either the Dicks (because they've feuded before and know each other well) or London and Spanky (because they would be some kick ass matches)...

Ric Flair should be given one, last, brief World Title run. he should win it on a PPV, then he should lose it to...

...Ken Kennedy, when he returns. he needs to be immediately inserted into the World Title scene.

Regal, Finley, and Burchill need to immediately be made into some heel faction, with Regal and Finley bringing this kid along, because Burchill has some amazing moves that would blow you away if you saw them.

Kid Kash needs to not break his arm.

Chavo should be given the shot Eddie got, and he should succeed or fail on his own merits.

Cade and Murdoch should be paired back up, and do a Texas Outlaw gimmick. This perverted film reviewer thing that Murdoch has going will kill him. together, they could be tough guys, win a few titles, and then eventually split and feud.

more NYRevolution type info...

When NYR opened Sunday night they hit the gigantic pyro and you could feel the building shake. Suddenly there was Red, White, and Blue confetti falling from the ceiling. Very few pieces, but probably 100 or so small pieces that just got jarred loose from their spot in the ceiling.

But when the show ended it never came down. So clearly it wasn't intended for Edge. My assumption is that it was intended for Angle but Vince made the last minute change knowing Angle would take the Smackdown title. And last night that same confetti fell when he won.

This means Vince changed plans sometime between 4pm Saturday (when setup began) and 10pm Sunday. So this shows the last minute, major booking that goes on in WWE.

I compare Vince's love of muscular guys to a baseball scout's affinity for so-called "Five tool athletes". If you ever get the baseball skills to work in combination with their athletic tools, you have a true superstar.

Most of Vince's prospects fade out because they can't wrestle. But when he does hit a home run, it creates a big star. When I was a kid and saw Hogan in Rocky III, I decided to found out about wrestling and remember watching Gorilla Monsoon and Heenan on whatever show that was (Tuesday Night Titans?!? Or was it a Monday show?). I was awed by Hogan, Big John Studd and Andre the Giant. They were awe inspiring. Lesnar was a big hit due to his size and the fact he actually knew how to put a hold on someone. Lashley has the tools (it seems) to make that move too - too bad he can't talk at all based upon that first promo I saw.

It's obvious that Vince feels that he ALREADY has a certain core group of 'hardcore' wrestling fans who will tune into the product almost no matter what. For years he has tried to mainstream the product to appeal to a wider market - and in his eyes the bigger and more spectacular they look in a pose - right or wrong - the easier it might be to sucker that new fan in.

If you're a 14 year old male - what's going to impress you more? Paul London's spectacular array of high flying moves, or Lashley body-press slamming some poor sap? It's sort of akin to a steroid-enduced 60 HR season compared to David Eckstein's scrappy, balls-out style of playing baseball.

PS - Masters is at least improving. He's doing better on the mic and slowly but surely he's getting smoother in the ring. He might be worth something before 2006 is out.

Farn, that's a great catch bro. There's no substitute for experience. ;)

Really interesting that the plans must have changed during that window. Batista was supposed to be seen by Dr. Andrews, and Andrews had a heart attack over the weekend. What are the odds of that?? So they obviously made a quick and forced decision.

Kinda of lost in the excitement of Angle taking the belt ... but if you check the spoilers it appears that Smackdown is only 2 matches. The battle royal must be pretty long.

Wow didn't realize (or think) that they would give Orton/Benoit PPV time. That was a pretty good match and leaves Orton with two paths now. Claim a shot against Angle since he was left out of the battle royal or go after Booker T since he owes him.

Smackdown has been scored and has been sent to Mike D for spreadsheet tweaking. He will post it.

Do Not Rescore Smackdown

here's how I listed the order of elimination for the Battle Royale. I'm pretty certain its accurate. I had to rewind Tivo a ton to figure out where the heck Super Crazy went out but I believe he exited thanks to Lashley about the same time Birchill did via Angle's German Suplex. But both would get 10 points either way so it works out fine.

Battle Royale Elimination Sequence (in order of first out to last left)

1. JBL
2. Vito
3. Animal
4. Simon Dean
5. Nunzio
6. Orlando Jordan
7. Wiliam Regal
8. Paul Birchill
9. Super Crazy (I'm pretty certain he was elminated just seconds before or after Birchill. But fortunately both would get the same # of points so its ok.)
10. Paul London
11. Psicosis
12. Bobby Lashley
13. Spanky
14. Grenier
15. Matt Hardy
16. Johnny Nitro
17. Joey Mercury
18. Rey Mysterio
19. Mark Henry
Winner: Kurt Angle
