Special Report: Project 161: Week 2: REAL! Roxbury Crossing, MA, August 10th 2007: "Project 161 Is Real. Project 161 Is Coming. Be Ready. No One Is Safe. Project 161." That was the announcement coming over the loudspeakers last night at the show in Boston, confirming what has been building up over the last two weeks, that the so called "Project 161" erm, project, is indeed real. Well, really an angle anyway. This is the beginning of what should be a near month and a half long build to the expected debut date of September 15th, 2007 of whatever it is that this Project turns out to be. We left off last week with the abusedsociety.com and nhsociety.com websites taken down, but they were soon replaced by a new and active website www.project161.com. Like the first website, there were creepy messages (albeit a new design with men dressed in skull paint), new images with mouse rollovers (if you put your mouse over a part of the website a hidden picture or message appears) and even, yes, a hidden blog (upper left hand corner of the website). This is the very essence of what an ARG (Alternate Reality Game) website does (for further reference, I discussed ARG's in last week's column). You have hidden secrets to discover, cryptic messages and such adding onto the game. Around the same time, ROH booker Gabe Sapolsky left a message on the ROH message board declaring the "prank" (his term) was dealt with and that people shouldn't worry about his safety. Many posters commented that this was his subtle way of saying this was indeed all a work, that he would not personally be involved in it and that the game was now back on. The secret Project 161 Blog began with the blogger writing dark and grim stories, with telling themes of neglect and abuse and the consequences thereof. People started to make wild guesses as to the involvement of past ROH wrestlers due to one phrase or another as written in these messages. Some have speculated Special K would be involved after there was a reference in the first blog to "the kids you forgot." Now, I tend to think this isn't a literal message but rather a metaphorical context to mean the people who have been neglected. However, it is interesting that Special K members are returning to ROH. This may or may not be a red herring. Another story referenced highway 915, a direct reference to 9/15, the date of the third ROH PPV and the 161st show. Later on, the messages changed from more of an allegorical nature to directly confrontational as the writer began to challenge blog respondents. The blogger also provide a direct challenge / threat o ROH in and of itself. One of these message said: "RING OF HONOR, WE ARE COMING. AND WE ARE COMING SOON." Another: "I'd call it a war, but it'll be more like an occupation, because there will be no struggle, simply annihilation." So the goals of this group can be speculated to be not an invasion and corporate take over, as was the case with the famous nWo vs. WCW angle. The Prophecy wanted to take over and remake ROH in its own image. Not so with Project 161. They just want to destroy ROH and be done with the whole thing. In the fifth posting, the blogger indicated that the people involved in this scheme have been involved with ROH before, again leading to more speculation that someone from the past is returning in this angle. What is fascinating about the blog is that If you write comments, 161 may react to it in follow up postings, as he had done with some of my and others' comments. I specifically and deliberately used quotes from movies such as Fight Club and The Matrix to counter some of 161's rhetoric In the next blog, 161 made derogatory comments about using movie quotes as the platform through which to view one's life. Heading into Death Before Dishonor weekend, one of that website's first statements was a play on that title, stating simply "There Will Be Death Before Dishonor" (this message has now changed). Later on, a picture of two children holding custom titles was posted as a mouse rollover to a faded ROH logo. These children are believed to be The Briscoes, as referenced in this article (thanks to Chris Miccio for the link): ""We've got pictures of them when they were little guys holding up those replica belts. They said that is what they were going to do," said Mrs. Pugh." The mouse rollovers also changed to pictures of the Boston Tea Party and signing of the Declaration of Independence—events linked to Boston and Philadelphia, locations for each night of the Death Before Dishonor V series. That leads us to where we currently are, with the "lights out" and PA speech from last night's show while a poster dubbed "HonorCantCure" was on the message boards rubbing the "attack" in the faces of those on the thread. A weird side note is that while this poster was listed as making only 3 posts, when it was quite clear he made much more than that in this thread. Tonight is night 2 of Death Before Dishonor-will something happen to The Briscoes on this night? Will Project 161 make itself more known by the end of the night? What we can we conclude about this whole situation is that like it has been said, Project 161 is very much now a part of the story for Ring of Honor. Judging by responses to the Death Before Dishonor night 1, ROH is going to need to make careful steps in how its uses the angle on its live shows. Some fans who don't check out the websites are going to be confused. Another issue will be to make the angle look as much like "Guerrilla warfare" against ROH as possible. Lights out attacks may not be so effective this time, but paper fliers and weird, inexplicable events occurring on shows may work better than the standard professional wrestling tactics used in other "invasion" angles. ROH has begun this angle out of the box and now it needs to continue the progression of the story by doing the same. We can now look forward and count down the days until September 15th, because things will go down that night that may change the very nature of Ring of Honor and its history. | ||||||

You know what this reminds me of? the move "The Game" with Micheal Douglas. Thats essentially what someone is doing, taking this "Alternate Reality Game" to another level for the new media fixated age using internet and AIM and website hacking etc. But then old school mind games like writing cryptic messages backwards on the bathroom mirrors at ROH shows. Every detail painstakingly outlined. Brilliant. | ||||||

ok. some background. the blog linked to from Great One isn't the "real" Project 161 blog. Project 161 started off as someone leaving a literal handful of print outs at the ROH shows in Long Island and New Jersey this summer. literally, a handful. then, a few nights later, someone began spamming the ROH message boards - to such an extent, that the traffic crashed it on two consecutive nights. that prompted several fans to start a blog to track Project 161 and try to get to the bottom of it. it was pretty crazy, as the fans tracked the email and phone number of the person who had the original project 161 website registered in their name. this led to fans making harassing phone calls to that person, and it led to them discovering that person's myspace page, and they began harassing everyone of her friends. and that led to the discovery of the photo linked to in the blog Great One linked to, which featured the booker of ROH, and his wife. and that's when Project 161 began threatening him and his wife. the the Project 161 website went down, before reopening at this site, with a brand new set of cryptic images that changed every few days... among the images we've seen are photos that have now been exposed of childhood photos of ROH World Tag Team champions Jay and Marc Briscoe - photos that are part of a photo album stolen from the family RV they take to every show that was broken into at one of the shows. we've also seen imagery on how to tie a noose, and one that generated a bit of controversy, because it was a Civil War era hanging, and everyone took it to be a group of black men being lynched. but, if anyone other than me had bothered to do any research, they would have realized the photo was from a civil war era prison, and the uniform colors very clearly indicated that it was Union soldiers doing the hanging, and it was Confederate soldiers being hung - something that is very interesting as the Briscoe brothers are very proud of their Southern heritage, and even where the confederate flag on some of their ring gear. now, the site has a ski mask, and a link to sign up to some sort of mailing list. reportedly, people who have signed up on this list have received cryptic emails which say things like "Ski mask!" and "Bandannas!"...which i find interesting - and i don't think anyone else has picked up on this yet - that the Briscoes have worn bandanas over their faces at more than one event. and, finally, there is a REAL Project 161 blog, written by whomever is behind Project 161. you can find it at this site here.... | ||||||

I love the analyzation of this photo - after it was cryptically posted on the blog. Most believe it was a clue as to where this was all to happen. Also, there were images of a "tea party" (prior to Boston and I think the other was the Declartion of Independence (of course in a negative image, prior to the Phily show).  The skyline on www.nhsociety.com may be London, England. The buidling in the center resembles the Clock Tower (Big Ben) in London. Project 161 may have an English connection, as well... However, Parliament is not visible and the skyline does not appear to be identical to London. If anyone has any alternate ideas for the city in the picture, please post it in the COMMENTS section. UPDATE: This may be an old picture of Chicago. The central building could be the Wrigley building. This would be yet another Chicago connection to Project 161. Please post any ideas you have. | ||||||

And this one... When the background image on www.abusedsociety.com is turned upside down, it resembles the Sears Tower and surrounding buildings. Furthermore, www.nhsociety.com prominently features the words "second" and "city." This could refer to Chicago, the "Second City." Whatever Project 161 is, it seems to be focused on Chicago. The 161st ROH show (and next PPV taping) takes place in Chicago. Many clues suggest this event is a focus of Project 161. | ||||||

the sepia-toned photo i believe is chicago. from the great chicago fire of 1871. also - in the Jimmy Loves Lacey videos, Jimmy Jacobs made a reference to how much he loves Chicago as they drove into the city, and there are many who believe Jacobs is involved with Project 161. | ||||||

First of all, this will all be on the October PPV so I can't wait for that. Supposedly one of the most innovate Ladder matches anyone has seen. 6) ROH World Tag Team Championship Ladder Match: The Briscoes retain the ROH Tag Tam Championships in what was described as "The greatest match I've ever seen in my life. Too many spots to name. Package piledriver on a ladder as well as a Jay Driller. Jay pulled down the belts." PROJECT 161 ~After the match The Briscoes are attacked by Tyler Black, Jimmy Jacobs, and NECRO BUTCHER! Jay is hogtied to the apparatus that held up the belts, and lifted 10 feet in the air bleeding. Jimmy stands under him cutting a promo getting covered in blood. Jimmy opened his mouth and drank his blood.    | ||||||

from Gerweck I will have a full - and very long ROH report sometime tomorrow morning. Further describing the wild (7 ladders, and 5 of them were trashed), bloody and incredible (****1/2) ladder match. The high points being when they set up the largest ladder mid ring and used put two smaller ladders between the middle rope and the large ladder steps like two small tables and did piledriver variations on them (Steen his his package piledriver on Mark, and Jay hit his J Drilla on Generico). The low point was some crowd brawling (which looked fun if you could actually see it) to start, and of course the belts being tied up to tightly so it took Jay forever to tear them down. Still a fantastic match, and the angle afterwards was insanely great, grusome, and necrolicious! | ||||||

Project 161 became the birth of the Age of the Fall. this clip contains the video. unless you have seriously great video quality on your computer, you can't really see the blood dripping, but you can see it pooling up on Jimmy Jacobs, and um, the part where he opens his mouth, catches the blood, and then spits it on Mark Briscoe. i love when the Camera focuses in on Necro Butcher, fist wrapped in barbed wire, and he says "I told you if you let me out of my cage, i was gonna pile the bodies to the sky"... and the last 50 seconds of the video - with the Briscoes losing their minds - may be one of my all time favorite ROH promos. | ||||||
