WrestleMania’s 10 Greatest Matches
March 9, 2004
Reported by: The Worm, rajahwwf.com reporter

I know I usually am responsible for the Heat and Velocity reports, but I figured since WrestleMania is coming up in less than a week, and tonight Ric Flair is hosting WrestleMania’s 10 Greatest Matches, why not recap them so anyone who is unable to see them will know which matches made the top ten?

Ric Flair welcomes us to the show and he starts counting down to the #1 Wrestlemania match.

#10 – Chris Benoit vs. Kurt Angle – Wrestlemania X7 (2001)

This one was a very intense and physical match, with the two wrestlers each using the other’s finishers and kicking out. Angle wins this match after rolling Benoit up with a handful of tights.

#9 – Hulk Hogan © vs. Ultimate Warrior (WWE Title) – Wrestlemania VI (1990)

Both men are down, Ultimate Warrior is the first up and he uses the Gorilla Press Slam followed by the big splash to finish Hulk Hogan off, but wait! Hogan kicks out! Hogan goes for the running leg drop, but Ultimate Warrior rolls out of the way and connects with the big splash and goes for the pin. Hulk Hogan kicks out just after the three count, but Ultimate Warrior becomes the next WWE Champion!

Commercial Break

#8 – Shawn Michaels © vs. Stone Cold Steve Austin (WWE Title, Special Enforcer: Mike Tyson) – Wrestlemania XIV (1998)

Shawn Michaels outmaneuvers Stone Cold early in the match, but it’s not long before Stone Cold regains offense. As HBK and Stone Cold are outside the ring, Triple H interferes, resulting in Mike Tyson sending him and Chyna away from ringside. This is one brutal match-up. Both men are now down, HBK kips up and hits his elbow drop, and goes for the Sweet Chin Music, but Stone Cold ducks, and goes for a Stunner, but HBK stops him and tries again for the Sweet Chin Music, but Stone Cold catches his leg and delivers a Stunner. Mike Tyson gets into the ring and counts to three, allowing Stone Cold to become the next WWE Champion!

#7 – Hulk Hogan & Mr. T (w/ Jimmy Snuka) vs. Paul Orndorff & “Rowdy” Roddy Piper (w/ Cowboy Bob Orton) – Wrestlemania I (1985)

This is an all-out brawl between all four men. Paul Orndorff & Roddy Piper seems to be in control for most of the match, but Hogan tags in Mr. T and they clean house. Jimmy Snuka and Cowboy Bob Orton take on each other, but then Bob Orton goes up top and goes to hit a double axe handle on Hogan, but inadvertently hits Orndorff instead, allowing Hogan to pick up the win for his team.

Commercial Break

Before we hear from Flair, we see a clip of Ric Flair latching the Figure Four on the Undertaker at Wrestlemania X8

#6 – Bret Hart vs. Stone Cold Steve Austin (Submission Match, Special Guest Referee: Ken Shamrock) – Wrestlemania XIII (1997)

Bret Hart manages to turn Stone Cold into a bloody mess by ramming his head into a metal security barrier as well as beating him down with a chair. Stone Cold manages to get all fired up and let’s loose on Bret Hart, which included choking Bret Hart with the ropes. Bret Hart smacks him with the bell, and then later manages to put Stone Cold into the Sharpshooter. Stone Cold manages to break it up for a moment before he’s put back into it.

The end comes when special guest referee Ken Shamrock stops the match because Stone Cold has passed out from the pain.

#5 – Hollywood Hulk Hogan vs. The Rock – Wrestlemania X8 (2002)

The crowd’s cheering for both competitors. They get into a shoving war and The Rock manages to lay the smack down on Hogan, which gets him some boos. The Rock has Hogan in the sharpshooter, to which Hogan taps out. However, there’s no ref to see it. The Rock whips him Hogan’s belt. The Rock connects with the Rock Bottom, but Hogan kicks out. Hogan connects with the running leg drop, but The Rock kicks out. The Rock finishes Hogan off with two Rock Bottoms followed by the People’s Elbow to win this historic match. To top it all off, they shake hands and they show their respect for each other.

Ric Flair taunts the Rock & Sock Connection and we’re at our next commercial break.

#4 – Ricky “The Dragon” Steamboat vs. Randy “Macho Man” Savage (Intercontinental Title) – Wrestlemania III (1987)

Both men cut some rather intense promos and Savage is in control of the Dragon. Dragon comes back with some offense of his own, and as Savage charges, the Dragon lifts him over and out to the mat. It’s a pretty good match and the end comes when Savage goes to slam the Dragon, but the Dragon rolls Savage into an inside cradle for the win and the IC title.

#3 – Razor Ramon vs. Shawn Michaels (Intercontinental Title, Ladder Match) – Wrestlemania X (1994)

Razor Ramon takes charge of Shawn Michaels, but Diesel interferes, resulting in him getting thrown out. It’s a hard fought battle, folks, and we see HBK fly off the ladder and splashing Razor Ramon. Shawn Michaels ALMOST had the belts, but Razor Ramon knocks over the ladder and both men are down. Shawn Michaels goes to whip Razor into the ladder, but Razor switches it and HBK hits the ladder and flies out of the ring. This time it’s Razor who almost has the belts, but HBK flies off the top and knocks the ladder over.

Razor’s under the ladder and HBK was a matter of seconds away from becoming the IC Champ, but Razor knocks the ladder over, which results in HBK’s leg getting tangled in the ropes when he lands. Razor manages to climb the ladder and take the belts down, making him the Undisputed WWE Intercontinental Champion.

Commercial Break

#2 – The Dudley Boyz vs. The Hardy Boyz vs. Edge & Christian (Triangle Ladder Match, WWE Tag Team Title) – Wrestlemania XVI (2000)

This match is brutality defined. There are people crashing on the ladders, flying off the top of the ladders, bodies broken, and so much more as happened during this match. It’s very hard to tell who will come out the tag champs. The end comes when Edge & Christian use two ladders and a table to create a scaffold. They take the titles down and you have your WWE Tag Team Champions.

Commercial Break

I can’t wait to find out what the #1 Wrestlemania match is, but as we come back, Ric Flair tells us that our #1 match will be:

#1 – Bret Hart vs. Shawn Michaels (60 Minute Iron Man Match) – Wrestlemania XII (1996)

This is the greatest Wrestlemania match ever, and it’s not hard to see why. Both men have put everything they have on the line and it’s only moments before we will find out which man will come out victorious. Two minutes left and HBK connects with a moonsault, but Bret Hart kicks out. 50 seconds remaining, HBK flies off the top, but Bret Hart catches him and locks on the Sharpshooter. HBK refuses to tap out, and the time’s up. Bret Hart retains the WWE title, but Gorilla Monsoon orders the match be continued under sudden death rules. Bret Hart doesn’t like it, and so goes berserk on Shawn Michaels. Shawn Michaels connects with the Sweet Chin Music, but he can’t make the cover. Shawn Michaels gets up and hits another Sweet Chin Music and here lies before you, the next WWE Champion! Pyro goes off and HBK’s boyhood dream has come true.

Ric Flair plugs Wrestlemania XX again, lets out a few WOOOs, and that’s the show. I hope you enjoyed it. Remember to tune into Wrestlemania XX this Sunday, where it all begins….again.

Didn't someone say they had a burner and could make a mix of matches on DVD?

I am very interested and would send you a check or something.
I know I have mentioned it before, but I still am looking for Tajiri vs. Super Crazy one on one from ECW. Even the ones that were on TNN which were a little more tame.

That and a mix of Foley's greatest hits, some NWA-TNA X-Division which is brilliant, and some more classic stuff like is mentioned above...
