0 Subject: Early vote for match of the year

Posted by: Mike D - [043546] Thu, May 04, 07:33

My vote goes to the 3 way tag team dance at Wreslemania. Incredible action from all 3 teams. I think it will be hard to top this one.

That's right at the top Mike D. But how about HHH and Mankind in Hell in the Cell? Remember the flaming barbed wire bat?

It's also a given that great matches will come out of this, but if you want to open the discussion to cover match of the year from either of the 3, you have to consider New Jack vs. Grimes. At the very least, that's got to be "bump of the year"

Yeah, with Grimes legitimately thinking New Jack was dead, laying next to him in a pool of blood....now that's the bump of the year. I don't think that was the match of the year there, IMHO.

I'm going to have to vote for the Hardcore match
in Wrestlemania. There was tons of action going
on. It kept moving, had a lot of good wrestlers
and Bradshaw with his cookie sheet for 5 minutes
was one of the funnies things I've ever seen in
wrestling.

khahan, that match wins for "most pin attempts in one match." ;)

also, most title changes in 1 match...don't think it will be beat

Lets not forget the HHH-Cactus Jack match at the royal rumble. IMHO that match made HHH a legit main eventer.

The Rock, please tell me it aint so. Your giving HHH credibility when he is a no talent hack who generally can't even recite his script properly. :-)

I've gotta give credit where credit is due. HHH had a helluva title reign. He's legit for sure. And that match was great, Rock.

Wrestlemania ladder match....by the 3 greatest tag teams in the history of the WWF. Its tough to ask for more than that.

Update on the voting:

Dudleys/Hardys/Edge & Christian Wrestlemania = 2
HHH/Mankind "hell in the cell" = 1
New Jack/Grimes = 1
Wreslemania Hardcore title match = 1
HHH/Cactus Jack Royal Rumble = 1

Mike D is right, HHH deserves a lot of credit. Like him or not you gotta agree he has been awesome the past several months. Few people have played a heel as good as he has recently.

HHH is the best damn wrestler out there today. Enuf said... he can draw heat quicker and more intensely than anyway and he can wrestle with that same passion. I've been a wrestling fan for probably 15 years now, and HHH has me marking (as much as you can in the crap they put out there for main events) at his promos. I hate the way wrestling is over the top with its popularity right now, and I must say... in all of Austin's popularity... he never pissed me off as much as the Rock does right now. He is absolutely worthless. Wrestling lacks long title runs now adays, and HHH provided the heel leader of a company that has been absent since the early Horseman days of Ric Flair. I wouldn't have taken that strap from HHH's waist until at least Survivor's Series.

But I'm not going to rant about the main event any longer. There are much better things going on right now.

1)Esse Rios
2)WCW
3)The Dudley Boys (before they were turned babyfaces)
4)The Sting/Vampiro angle
5)The fact that I'm afraid Jeff Hardy won't be able to walk by the time he's 25.
6)Sean Stasiak (how to build a company rule #1: you need a self-admiring narcissistic heel)
7)The fact that Shane Douglas and Ric Flair not only work for the same company, but have actually entered the same ring together.
8)Joey Matthews and Christian York are working dark matches at RAW (The Bad Street Boys are what Three Count was supposed to be. I love the gimmick, and I love these kids as wrestlers. Trust me on this one... it's going to be huge)
9)Kirk Angel
10)It's RVD's turn to put that company on his back and run with it.

As for match of the year? I'm going to have to draw back into my memory bank. Are we counting all the way back to last year's WM? That is the traditional "wrestling season." I still say that the first ladder match between the Hardz/E&C was much better than the WM version. That match defined a new era in innovativeness. I saw things done with a ladder there that I never pictured in my wildest dreams. The WM featured more high-flying spots, but basically added nothing new to the program (save for the table structure).

Great analysis, Fosten. Quit marking for HHH. ;)

I really was thinking the calendar year, rather then the Wrestling year, which is why I used the word "Early." As you said, I'd really have to search the memory banks in 1999......probably safer to use 2000!

BTW, I'm very, very disappointed in the Dudleys dancing with Too Cool. I don't mind them getting face heat, but blood thirsty tough guys shouldn't be dancing. Sucks.

Cool thread.

I haven't been seeing as much WWF lately, but the Dudley's turning "babyface" is about as attractive as Pat Patterson's "skid marks". Frankly I love the Dudleys as a team and thought the Mae Young off the ramp into a table shot, with Buh-Buh looking a bit delirious was the best stuff going....Dudley's and Too Cool? Say it ain't so!

HHH deserves props. Lays his a$$ on the line in all of the big events.

Species in the house! Great analogy with Dudleys and Patterson. I go way back to ECW with the Dudleys...some intense live matches.

Hmmm....Bubba Ray is great but dancing with Too Cool is a mistake.

Maybe they needed something other than the table thing to do now. Id say look out for the Dudleys and Too Cool to feud with this dancing stunt just a means of getting them into a feud with Too Cool. The Dudleys have been turning face with the audience for awhile now and really its not good for them. Too Cool are huge face so if the Dudleys feud with them then they hopefully will be seen as heel again at least with Too Cool fans. Could be a good angle. And it elevates Too Cool that much closer to main eventers with the likes of E&C, Hardys and Duds...

Donky, I really hope you are right. I shudder at the thought of Bubba Ray dancing, and will change the station if they show it. So far it has been after the TV monitors have gone off the air (I think).

Well, with as much as Fosten said that I disagree with (WCW being one of the great things going on right now?) I do have agree that the WWF needs a long title run. The problem is, they wrong guy had
the title for too long. No, the champion does not
have to be a 'good guy.' but at least give him a gimmick that wasn't old before it was started. I can't believe how many people (myself included) think the whole Helmsley/McMahon crap is old hat that was overdone and has reached levels of absurdity. Get on with it. give the title back
to HHH, keep him a bad guy, but give him a decent gimick. Or, let The Rock keep the title and his gimmick. He's got a good one going that fans love and look forward to seeing. But quit with the constant title changes. WWF needs 1 superstar to step forward and simply rule it in the ring (and only in the ring) for a good year long run, if not longer.

khahan - When I was originally a fan of the WWF as a teenager in the mid-80's, holding a title actually meant something. When a title changed hands it was a BIG BIG deal. Hulk Hogan held it a bit too long, but still it was cool to have the suspense that he could lose it any minute.

I remember Randy Savage being the IC Champ for years and loving his heel act. The Hart Foundation were great tag team champs and I can still see it like it was yesterday when Rick Martel stuck one of the Harts in a "Boston Crab" to score the huge upset. I remember talking to my buddies the next day "can you BELIEVE the Harts lost????" It was huge.

When I kinda got back into it HHH had just "defected" to "The Corporation". As I watched more, I realized the WWF had turned into speeches, thongs and fake racks - one of these days I think I'll time a RAW episode with a stopwatch and see how much of the 2-hour show actually includes ring action.

Frankly, I laugh at the audacity of some of the stuff but I do admit that the "Sports Entertainment" aspect (i.e. not calling it a sport) makes it more tolerable.

Back to the point, long title reigns are good. The faces tend to overcome all of the cheating of the heels (when the face is a champ) and that makes the fans happy for their hero. The heels cheat, scratch and claw (and DQ themselves) to keep the belts which raises the heat level. Crash Holly winning the Hardcore title 8 times now may be funny because it's a meaningless title. WWF or IC belts moving around every other week is just plain lame.

I think we've gotten off track with the point of this thread, it's about great matches. Does anyone have any more suggestions?

I'm not sure if it was last year, but what about the night Kane had the Brood in a pile in the middle of the ring, poured gasoline all over them and was about to set them alight? I found that to be great sports entertainment and just cool to see how far they would let him go.

adhoo, I agree we got off the point of the thread, but having a wrestling dialogue like this is well worth it. Just the fact that the words "Boston Crab" have appeared on RotoGuru is tremendous. Kind of hard to seperate the thoughts into different threads sometimes.

Frank p, that was cool, but match of the year???
;)

Species, you made me recall a good story. I used to work at a TV station (once upon a time) and we'd get the taped wrestling shows in during the week which would air on the weekends. The Macho Man (Oh yeah!) was the IC champ. The challenger was everybody's favorite heel, the man who could sing, dance, and rassle, the Honky Tonk Man. Ok, not everybody's favorite heel, but my brother and I loved the guy.

Anyway, I'm in the studio checking out the matches on visual fast forward, and I see this match come on. I watch it at normal speed. My boss yells to me and I explain I am "busy." Honky Tonk Man takes the gold, in a stunning development, and I go nuts! Then I call my brother, and tell him I have a "really" good feeling that the title may change hands this weekend. He says no way. That weekend, my phone rings......it was great.
