my dad is a big scotch drinker. loves the stuff. me? im a tequila drinker. i don't know squat about scotch, other than the fact that Single Malt is better than...errr...Double, Triple, or Home Run Malt (??!?!)
his birthday is this weekend.
anyone got any reccomendations on a good single malt that is somewhat accessible at most liquor stores, that won't break my bank completely? |

Get him a bottle of Cragganmore, and you can't go wrong.

Another option which might be a little harder to find, but of comperable pricing would be the highland park 12yr. I don't know if it is available at your local liqour store, but if it is I would go with that one. If not PD reccomendation of a cragganmore is a good one as well

Single Malt Whiskey tend to vary in taste. If you don't know your father's preference then you should probably go with a safe choice that appeals to many.
I suggest Macallan.

Ditto that. I don't know much about scotch, but I do like Macallan.

i know he used to drink Dewers, and also Glenfiddich or somesuch nonsense. why can't things be more simple, with good, old fashioned Mexican names...liked Herredura or Don Dueno or something... :o)

so buy your favorite bottle of tequila and tell him, "Dad. This is something we can share together. You know...Father-Son and all? Besides, after 1/2 dz shooters, you wont know, or care...that it isnt scotch."

Well Dewers predominatly makes blended scotches, still good but not what you were origanally looking for. If you want to get what you know he likes, look for a glenfiddich 15yr solera reserve. It will run about forty bucks a bottle, but highly regarded.

Tree, from a guy who works in the industry, and drinks scotch- 3 choices that he will love if you can find them, which Im sure you can.
1. Oban (14 yr or Doublewood) This is one of the best single malts on the planet. Not only does it have a nice smokey taste to it, but also they don't make it anymore after the last batch they had. If you can find this, it will be nice for him to have. The reason they don't make the scotch anymore is because they ran out of distilled water in the caves they got their water from, and the place burnt down...yeah. So in like 5 years, this scotch is going to be pretty darn expensive. Could be hard to find.
2. Bruichladdich 10 year. The best 10 yr scotch out there you can find. You can't go wrong with Bruichladdich at any year, but I find the 10 year to be especially good. Once again, not a peaty type of scotch (Glennfiddich is not peaty either, it is smokey).
3. Highland Park 12 year Once again, smokey. The least expensive out of the 3, this is another one he would really like.
I also recommend the before mentioned Glennfiddich 15 year Solera reserve. Very nice scotch, and considering he already drinks the regular stuff, this should do well.
Other ones that you can't go wrong with Aberlour, Springbank, Bowman's.
He will like any of these.

kev,
Surprised not to see Lagavulin on your list. Another example of a good single malt where limited supplies are making it tougher to find.
I haven't seen the 12yr variety much and when I do want it, I have to settle for the 16yr because the 12 is sold out :(

Agree with Astade about the Lagavulin. And, the same issue with finding the 16, but not the 12. Every so often my local place will get the 12 in and save me a bottle.
Others I was surprised nobody mentioned.
Bowmore 12 Laphroaig 10
Key to remember, that I generally enjoy single malt and a cigar at the same time.
And I have the ability to buy at the base and get a little bit better price. If they have what I want.

i actually ended up with an Aberlour.
they had the Oban, and i really wanted to get that because i love the story, but it was fairly expensive, and since my girl and i are saving for a house and marriage and all that, she woulda killed me...

Yeah, Oban is up there in price. You should have just ordered for me- I get my discount, and it's Canadian money too!
I do like Lagavulin as well. I find the doublewood nice- never had the 12 year. Will have to do a search for it.

lol, maybe a few years ago. the canadian dollar and us dollar are more or less equal these days...except for the fact that canadians have Loonies (because there is a Loon on the coin), and Toonies (because it equals two Loons), which makes it much cooler...
