Subject: Root Canal Time!

Here is a topic I don't think we have touched on before...
Tomorrow I have to get a root canal. From those of you who have been through this, how much pain will I feel during the procedure even if I am supposedly numbed up? How much pain will I be in afterwards? Will some tylenol suffice when its over?
The reason we are getting to this is because I still felt everything they did even with novacane when first attemped to use a filling. Its a tooth all the way in the back on the bottom. They will be employing a combo of novacane and nitrus. Also - I should not be driving up the NJ Turnpike after getting the nitrus, correct? :) |

I found the pain of a root canal to be very much exaggerated (and I had 2 or 3). There should be little pain during the procedure -- there should maybe be a dull sense of pain, anything more, demand more anaesthetic. Afterwards, it's bearable but make absolutely sure you ask for a prescription for the highest Tylenol (I know they have 5. 6?) before you leave. Prob you won't need it. Stock up on Extra-Strength beforehand. Really you should get the script before you go under, because afterwards you may be in so much pain you can't think rationally ;)
Seriously, it was a big bore.

Had my 3rd one back in October, during the procedure no pain, more discomfort as the mouth is wide open for up to an hour (mine was in the back as well).
The pain afterwards with the first 2 was hardly noticeable, the 3rd one, done by a "specialist" was achie-extrastrength Tylenol did the trick.

Thanks guys.
I wish they would just do the crown at the same time and get it all over with, but they tell me I need to come back and do that on another trip which sucks.

Once they take the root out, there is no nerve through which to feel the pain. Some strange pressures when they are doing the work, but you shouldn't have much trouble with the pain.

The most overrated thing I ever went thru. I stayed up at night in a cold sweat thinking it would be like childbirth. In the end I felt nothing and the discomfort in the tooth went away immediately. They gave me one Tylenol 4 or something like that (can't remember) and I didn't even fill the perscription.

LOL! How the heck would you know...and don't tell me, "well, I was there when mrs. culdeus...." ;-) That's something a Tylenol 4 won't help!
Nah, its (the root canal) no biggie.

Not to worry, Katie! Assuming your dentist has the latest drugs, you'll be fine.

I have a friend who is a dentist and says that dentists love root canals - quick and easy and lots of cash.

Depends. Have had one where there was virtually no pain--just discomfort and a couple where there was huge pain as they couldn't get it numb. If there is an infection, the bacteria is acidic--which isn't affected by the numbing medicine--and you will really feel it. It really boils down to where it is in your mouth. If it's the back molar or you have long roots or a smaller mouth it could be more difficult.

Hi...I am a dentist. Not really here to add much, but to corroborate when most have said. Root Canal pain has been virtually eliminated in the recent past with effective local anesthetics and good pain medicines for any post-op discomfort. I do suggest that you ask for a RX, just in case.
Half kidding and half seriously, the greatest pain is in the wallet?!?!

A re-treatment of a root canal is the worst because you don't know you need it until it is all infected! That has happened twice to me. I'd like my original dentist that can't figure out how to correctly do a root canal to pony p for this additional costs--not even counting the pain involved.

Surely everyone is wondering. It went ok, I am alive. Pretty much what PD said in post 4 - there was some pain til he took out the nerve and then it was ok. He even said - if you feel anything, it'll hurt for about 10 seconds at most and I will have the nerve done with after that.
My jaw hurts more than anything. And I am starving but afraid to eat anything tonight.
Now on to the crown next week - this is the easy part, right? :) Thanks all!

Congrats!
Now that you've done the work, make sure to look out for any swelling. I had a root canal done in which they didn't get out all of the root, and the thing got infected--it looked like I had a big chaw in my mouth for about a week until the antibiotics knocked it down.
Not to worry you or anything... :)

PD, Been there done that twice. I'd love to send the bill for the re-treatments to my former dentist!!! Once is bad enough, but twice? And the pain from the infection is horrible. Mine was so bad that the endontist actually had to take a scalple and cut the gums all the way down twice so it could drain. Malpractice!!!

That's great. I know of people that are the same way. Good genes perhaps or very good hygiene. I never had a cavity until I was a teenager and I had great hygiene by then. ;)

So I went in to get my crown put on, and they tell me I now need to get "crown lengthing" first because the decay went below the gum line.
So... anyone had this? I am assuming this is essentially shaving down the gums so they are lower than where the decay ends. This is gonna suck I have a feeling.

Don't know about that particular diagnosis, but I do find this curious: over the years, dentists have found more things to charge money for. Not sure any of it's reflected in fewer trips to the dentist, however.

I've had two crown lengthenings. Lots of blood, but heals quickly. Only painful for a couple days at most. Expensive though. Dentists and esp. specialists are more expensive than medical doctors!

How come dentists can charge whatever price they want and the dental insurance lets them and we the patients have to pony up the rest? While medical doctors cannot get away with that, as health insurance negotiates with doctors and the patient does not have to pony up the rest.

Agreed sos...and the dental insurances themselves are total bogus. They charge so much and you have limits and caps and one year waiting periods and even lifetime caps (like braces and the like). Crowns, bridges, root canals...outrageously priced.

Crown Lengthening was fun, I highly reccomend it! They shaved the bone down inside my mouth for an hour, blood was spurting everywhere like a geyser and now I have a mouth full of stiches. Hopefully I will eat again by Monday. :)
