Here is a hand I felt like I played well (helps when you are playing a donkey)...I had probably played 20 hands at this table and had identified one real loose type that was really pushing around the other players. I sat down and started playing loose...a bluff or two but also made some hands...came over the top of the villian and pushed him off some hands. I knew his type would not appreciate this and was ripe for a big trap.

The out of position check can be a nice play against the right type player. I also like to use it against a smaller stack that I think is on a missed draw...where I know I am going to call any bet on the end and I think the only way to get the other players money is to give him a chance to bluff at it.

This hand I was not as sure I was ahead but I knew I had to call the river with the player having very little left and a lot of money in the pot. Thought about folding on the turn...

Question for the day: if he had pushed all in on the turn what would you have done? It seems like a silly play to toss in $120 and leave only $84 behind... maybe I'm not thinking right though. I guess he was that sure his pair of 8s was good and wanted to get all the money in in two stages?

If he pushed all-in on the turn...I call. I remember thinking when the K came on the turn that I could be beat and almost folded to the 120 bet but felt I was still good against this player. Basically when I decided to call the 120 I was committing to the show down and expected to call an all-in on the river.

This play was probably a little looser than I generally play but I was running over this table pretty well and was up at the time ~4x the buyin. I had the table playing very loose and I had showed down some winning weak hands and had caught a draw or two. I think most of the table was tilting.

The split bet is an ok choice...just gives him another round to fire on the river to push me off of a hand...

Pfui... yeah, I know I shouldn't have played it. Trust me, being in a lot of pots preflop was very +EV against this crowd. I wouldn't have been surprised to see a pair of aces played this way.

Getting ready for my now-annual birthday poker trip to Vegas in 2 weeks. Staying two nights at the Tropicana dirt cheap ($45/night). Chose it because it's across the street from the MGM where I plan on doing most of my playing. Thanks again to TRS for posting allvegaspoker.com which has all of the tourneys in Vegas.

MGM has added twice daily tourneys (11am and 6pm IIRC) and with their room and relatively loose games it's perfect. I'd imagine I will squeeze in something like 35 hours of poker in the 52 hours or so I'm in Vegas! :)

I changed my live play to another card room in town that's really a bar with 7 tables in the back. Lots of loose drunks on Fri/Sat night so the 4/8 game is fairly loose.

Viva Las Vegas!

The Wynn Tuesday and Thursday $330 tourney at noon has a good structure(3k starting chips blind increases every 45 minutes). Plenty of dead money(ex: saw an all in with pocket 5's the first hand, another guy calling off all his chips with a naked flush draw on level 1) the two times I played it. Plus, the Wynn is badarse. Actually, had to do a double take when I saw Lebron James walking around.

I will be in Vegas in November...thanks for the advice on the Wynn tournament...cept I will be there thurs through sunday...anyone else have any advice on tourneys...I don't mind paying ~500 buyin or right around there. I figure for cash games low limit NL tables will be available pretty much everywhere.

Likely staying at the Venetian...can get rooms there through priceline for ~135 a night...not bad for a 400 a night hotel...

Been rolling so good lately...have had only one losing session since July 4th...

Pretty sure the Wynn has a very similar tourney on Friday for $530. Also, from what I've heard Caeser's 7 PM is really weak and has a decent structure(1500 starting chips for $130 1 rebuy for $100 for 3000 chips, 40 minute levels).

Watched the first two main event episodes. For all of the crap Hellmuth earns for his antics, you have to give the dude crazy props as he has the cajones to lay down big hands. Could you believe some of the stuff he came up against almost literally right after sitting down?!?!?

I have a favor to ask of anyone that does NOT have a current Party Poker account. This means you have NEVER opened one.

Rabeback.com has a huge $50,000 free roll for NEW player sign ups and according to their e-mail (see below) there are very few players signed up ---- making for a huge overlay.

DETAILS of the $50K free roll here

You have to sign up a new account through rakeback.com to be eligible, and I already have a PP account so I can't do it.

Here's my proposal for anyone willing to do me a favor:

1. Contact me
2. Sign up using the link I posted above. It's important that you follow ALL the directions to qualify.
3. I'll send your $125 via NetTeller or Firepay and you fudn the PP account with $100; leaving you $25 for your trouble.

4. Once the account is created, send me the user name and password-- remember you have nothing to lose as it will be MY money that has funded the account.

5. I'll play the tourney and ater the tourney, transfer any winnings (player transfer) to my regular PP account.

6. I'll also leave any bonus money PP gives for you if you want to keep the account and play at PP.

I know this is kind of a pain in the butt, but I'm hoping someone will lend a skank a hand?

We Put Up $50,000 For An August Freeroll That Still Has Only 15 RakeBreak Players Registered!

This is a huge overlay at our expense guys, or we wouldn’t have sent
another email on it. The $50,000 is going to be paid out even if
no other players sign-up.

RakeBreak.com (along with 5 other affiliates) put up a $50,000
guaranteed minimum prize pool for August in a new 'Party Poker Mega
Snowball' and right now only 15 RakeBreak members have registered
for it. It is our understanding that the other 5 affiliates mark-
eting this have signed up very few new players also.

We know many of you already have a Party Poker account so you would
not be eligible, however, if you have friends or family that don’t
then PLEASE tell them about the huge equity in this for August.
We will even waive the 1,000 raked hand requirement for August to
encourage NEW players to sign-up.

This $50,000 freeroll is in addition to the Monster! The details
and sign-up instructions for you or a friend can be found here:

multi-table tourney:
KJ spades
flop is A-10-2 all spades
4 of us go all-in and I prepare to do the victory dance. 10 comes down on the river. some dude hits the FH with 10-2.

argh.

there is definitely an element of skill in the game (especially in a live game, as compared to on-line), but sometimes you are just destined to lose and no amount of skill will stop it.

I've won 2 of these tournaments before (not bragging - I've played my fair share of em). both times I was extremely lucky, many times over. it wasn't really my skill that won them. there are plenty of decent players in any tourney who are good enough that they could win. it's like trying to walk through a mine-field. the only way you get through the mine-field is a little persistence and a LOT of luck.

I suppose that's why hold 'em is so popular. the level of luck is high enough that a lot of people are willing to take their chances with it. you don't see a lot of high-stakes chess rooms around. if someone challenges you to a $50 game of hold-em, what the hell, go for it. if someone challenges you to a $50 game of chess, run.

In multi-table tournies you need to get lucky to win it all. However, I've always felt (and read) that skill will get people to the point where luck can take over. If you've lost an all-in with J10os to an AJos on a J-high flop 10 hands into the tourney, your lack of skill never allowed you to stick around long enough for luck to give you a boost.

I happen to feel that being bubbled because of bad luck 3 hours in is far worse then busting 10 minutes in because of a weak kicker. At least you get 2 hours and 50 min to do something else with! ;)

short term poker is 90% luck...long term it is 90% skill (or really probably 100% skill)...

any one tournament you are likely going to have to get lucky (or not unlucky) but if you are playing many tournaments and you are skilled you will find your way to the final table more often than average...

Definitely a skill game in the longrun...but not like chess where skill is the primary factor short or long term.

Phew!

Finally got a top 50 in one of those Moneymaker Millions freerolls that PS has been holding. Was about my 5th one entered. 5165 entrants.

At one point, I was down to about 2.5k with the blinds 300/600 after two beats. First one he's chasing inside straight draw against my two pair and hits on the turn. I got out cheaper than I might have when he decided to slow play it. Second one, I had AJ on the button to his J4 in the BB with a board of XXJ (rainbow, no real scare cards). I bet about 3/4 the pot, and he calls. A 4 comes on the turn, and he slow plays again and I check. River misses me, and I pay off his 1/2 pot-sized bet. Cold cards and blinds get me down to 2.5k. Triple and quadruple up (mostly through the same guy that crippled me... that was nice) a couple of times and get back to an average chip stack in a matter of about 4-5 hands.

Had KK four times, and could never get anybody to play. Towards the end, I doubled up with QQ vs. the table bully's AT (phew!) putting me at about 90k. I stole a couple of blinds with quality hands, but mostly sat on my stack from about 70 players on. Got a couple of timely walks.

Of course I got lucky my fair share of times, but the odd thing is that only one time the entire tournament did I have anything better than two pair. I caught a flush from the BB on the turn with J7h, and couldn't get any callers.

Any idea what the round 2 tickets are worth? Can they be transfered? Probably not worth much, but I am curious to know.

My father is in the round 3 this weekend, took him 7 tries at round 1 to advance, and placed in the round 2 on his 1st try. The round 2 isn't very difficult, there were 1300 people in his with top 240 advancing, so he just played tight/solid and 'made the money' easily. I'd play the round 2 in your boots Sludge, not too difficult and the round 3 prizes are kickin'. :)

Ask your dad how the early play during the Round 2 was, if you don't mind R9. Was it typical of the low buy-in tournies at PS? I played pretty tight most of the Round 1. Very tight at the beginning. When we got to about 80-90 left, I loosened up just a bit while everyone was ratcheting down to steal a few blinds and get my stack to where I could sit on it until the end. I wasn't anywhere near the stack size where I could pressure the short stacks, but I wasn't in much danger of being short stacked myself, being in the top 30 the whole time.

Two things I saw that amazed me, though:

One guy had about 180k with about 60 left. Easily enough to sit on and make the top 50. He tangled with another big stack chasing a flush, and pissed all but 6k of it away with the blinds at 3/6k. (Amazingly, he survived, and finished at about 2k in his stack.)

I can understand the folks who play slow when it's not hand-for-hand play. They get to see fewer hands and pay less blinds and antes. Once you get to hand-for-hand, however, that strategy goes out the window, and is, in fact, worse for you because you see fewer hands per level of blinds/antes. Yet every table had 2-4 people doing it once we got to hand-for-hand play, and it wasn't the big stacks doing it! Simply astounding.

He played tight the whole way in the round 2, and said the early play was real solid. Not too many people taking chances, and lots of bullying for blinds even at those low limits. I'd expect nothing less from an overall group who had to make top 50 in the round 1's though.

Oh well. Went out about 380th. Hard to play tight when you aren't getting any cards or hitting any hands. Yet again, the entire tournament, I got nothing higher than a pair. Decided to make my stand with Kh9h in early position hoping folks would respect the raise and if they didn't, maybe I could get 2-3 callers and get really lucky. Other short stack went all-in on me with KQo, dominating me.

Nicely played. Your all-in raise should have raised a red flag but it would have been hard to put you on pocket 4's.

I assume a few people are keeping up with ESPN's coverage of the Main Event. Nobles had such a huge stack, but almost reckless play caused him to nearly pi$$ it all away. Aggression is great and obviously he bullied his way to that stack, but is it me or does the dude need to realize the importance of changing gears once in a while?

He got sooooooooo lucky against the German dude when he had A-8 vs. KK and top pair on the flop was an 8. When someone check-raises you for all of their chips, do you seriously think that TPTK is good?!?!? WTF?

Seeing how Hachem got busted was brutal. Looking forward to see what kind of poker Cunningham plays.

I agree. He got very lucky a number of times. He called off most of his stack with TP earlier on when a Q hit the river and he help QT vs AQ. The best part was that had was immediately after he got off his cell phone and said his next hand would be A's or K's. Oops.

One of the players I am keeping my eye on is Eric Molina.
They showed his father Roy on the cell phone keeping family members informed.
When my son was in little league Roy Molina was coaching Eric while I was coaching my son.
Very competitive.
During the last hour shown on ESPN last week Eric was #2 in chip count with about 600K+.
He just turned 21 so it is quite an accomplishment to get this far at such a tender age.

Still have not looked at any spoilers or even seen any kind of headline as to any winners.

I agree Eric came off as a real jerk.
Its a shame the young players in the game today dont see the value in letting their poker game do the talking for them.
It was classic internet player to berate someone for calling 100K with A-10s when they were the moron who made the 100K bet with Q-Js in the first place.
I will say the second hour depicted him much more like the 12 year old kid I rememeber.... very quiet and respectful.
Demeanor aside, you have to give the kid props for winning 327K and doing as well as he did.
Maybe when he sees how he came accross on TV he will realise the errors of his ways and change his attitude to match his game.

weykool - well, the guy is just 21 so I think anybody watching has to at least consider that. Plus, the brashness/bravado was also a very big part of his game - likely inducing calls when he wanted calls and folds when he wanted folds. But there comes a point where you have to have respect for your opponents and the game, and perhaps he'll learn that.

While perhaps it is more common on the internet for players to berate other players (obviously with the anonymity the net provides), it's quite common live too. I called a dealer at my local card club down with 44 with all overs on the board and won when he had nothing.

"Why would you call that down with a pair of fours?!?" he asked.

"Because I didn't think you had made a hand. If my read was wrong then I paid for the information, plain and simple."

I love how the caller is always the idiot compared to the bluffer. Can't they accept that they made a bad bluff? I guess that's just poker - you make a bluff and represent a hand. It shouldn't be the other player's fault if they sniff out the rat.

I have never limped with KK UTG and didn't feel to confident going against 5 other hands. Wasn't really worried about AQ but Q9 scared the crap out of me...

Absent any information you haven't posted. If I have KK, I go broke or double up there. I can't belive Q9 is a threat with a 7 call and a 20 bet before his hand would be made. My guess is he has a smaller set (JJ maybe).

Definitely would be worried about Q9, since he saw the flop cheap and just called on the flop. (7$ for an open-ended straight draw isn't a bad call at all.)

On the other hand, more info is needed. What is your image like? If you play tight/agressive and regularly raise your big hands (and he's good enough to know this) he probably doesn't put you on KK, JJ or 1010, and may believe his two pair KJ is good.

Aside from a huge read that would leave me in serious doubt (I.E. He's a rock that never bluffs, or only moves all-in with a huge hand) I go broke or double up here. You have top set with no flush possibilities and only two possible straights. The biggest straight, AQ, would have to call a gutshot on the flop, and this guy was the 1st caller. (Not like the 3 other callers gave him odds or something, he didn't know they were in yet.) The Q9 straight isn't a hand alot of people play, so if he's reasonably tight then the odds of that go down significantly. He also would probably be afraid that the river could ruin his hand, so if I had Q9 on this board on the turn, I probably raise you right there. His call is pretty telling, and unless you know him to be a monster trapper, you have to reduce his likelyhood of Q9 even more.

Your check on the river showed alot of weakness too, thus he may have felt like he could steal it with a big bet. So, you just can't throw away top set everytime a better hand possibly hits the board. There are too many other hands he could play this way, given your limp preflop; he could have a lower set or a high two pair, or top pair/busted flush draw, etc.

I thought that also, that if he had Q9 he would go all in on the turn instead of the river. The guy hadn't been there that long and didn't have to show many hands so I just had to go by the situation, the betting and having the 3rd best hand. Top pair and missed straight...
