Who here has family or friends in the war?

My brother-in-law is in Mosul, Iraq.

My brother in law just returned last month from Iraq--his second tour. Safe and sound.

My best friend's son is back after two tours. He came through healthy and in decent spirits.

My daughter has two good friends whom she attended high school with. One has lost both legs below his knees, and the other one has served one tour, and has several more years to go on his six year obligation. He has been extremely depressed for some time due to his experiences there, and believes he will be ordered back sooner rather than later.

Not a friend per se, but a fella bought a bike today, Chief Warrant Officer 3 pilot. Just got back 3 days ago. Said he's getting out after 15 years, because he's been there for two rotations so far and he'll be damned if he's going back.

I don't know anyone who's been to Iraq. Ask me about Vietnam.

My best man (and best friend).
My sisters husband.
My cousin.
An easy bakers dozen of guys I'm still in contact with from my
years in the corps.
My uncle Joe is a retired USA flag grade and is currently doing
consulting work and is in and out of the ME frequently.

Posted this last October---my brother-in-law has been in Iraq
since June 2006! I wanted to share the good news of his
"proposed" depature from Iraq has been said to be September
20ish! That will be a good day! 15 months away from his wife and
two young kids is brutal!

My son served 2 tours in Iraq and is now officially out of the Marines at the tender age of 22...was based out of 129 Palms, California..left as a Sargent and enjoyed the whole experience, but is happy to be returning to civilian life..will be return to California to start college (not sure where) but with an initial investment of $100 a month from his pay for the first year will receive $1200 a month to go to college..Was a long, hard 4 years for me but very proud of him as a young man...still I have a heavy heart for those that didn't return and their families

A friend of friend (I guy a have played fantasy locally with for 10 years, but never really hung out other than that), is reputedly making 300K/yr teaching fingerprinting in the green zone.

Might be worth it. Maybe.

Been a long while OMG, since I'd seen you post. Kudos to your son my friend. I'm glad to hear of his return and that he is going to be doing well. You sir, have every right to be proud of that young man.

AC...Congrats also on the impending return of your long absent family member. 15 months apart, is a DAMN long time. My best to he and his family, and they "reunite" and get used to each other again.

was based out of 129 Palms, California

They must have planted 100 palms since I've last been through ;)

Not even 100,000 new palms would improve that armpit, however...

Had a friend in the Green Zone for several months a couple years back working with lawmakers there to facilitate the Iraqi Constitution. Indicated it was tough to find agreements, and that the security of the Green Zone and the various gear you had to wear, drills, etc. was all a bit cumbersome, but necessary. Only once in his time there did he feel at all in danger though, said most of the time it was quite placid once you got accustomed to the various security routines, seeing the private security details walking around with guns, etc. The only security concerns he had were for the Iraqi translators and other workers who lived outside the green zone... their walk to/from work and the threats to their families if discovered... THOSE were the people living in real danger. Not the American bureaucrats and journalists.

No other acquaintances over there.

If someone's making 300k/year in the green zone for a civilian gig, I think that's very worth it... the danger really isn't that all that high IMHO. The bigger price is just being away from friends/family for so long.

Oh, and LOL "must have planted 100 palms". :)

My brother in law touched down yesterday at FT Lewis in
Washington! What a good day! Home after 15 months! Was an
amazing experience to watch all those soldiers come home!
