Subject: Administration cuts money for African peacekeepers

US votes for peacekeepers, then refuses to pony up all the money.
According to White House figures quietly released this week, more than $193 million for U.N. troops would be cut for missions in Liberia, Rwanda, Sudan, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Cote d'Ivoire and elsewhere. A State Department official who would not be named confirmed to ABC News Monday that the cuts could be even worse.
Apparently the Administration doesn't even have the balls to vote against something it won't pay for. They vote for it, then withhold money from it. |

Not the first time this admin has done that very thing. (Anyone remember "No Child Left Behind"?)
So much for "compassionate conservatism". Talk about a project for which the world is in dire need, and that same project is in equal need of funding.

How far are you guys willing to go to help Africa? Should we have our own boys there kicking butt or should we just fund the UN to make ourselves feeeeeeeeel better?

We should, at minimum, do what we say we will do.
Debating how much we need to intercede in other countries is something we should do all the time, of course. But once we've agreed to a certain committment level (and voted to do so--this isn't something done over our objections) then we need to follow through.
Personally, I'd rather have a hands-on approach to some countries, particularly ones in which a small, early, intercession can do a lot of good and save a lot of lives.

Sending in butt-kicking Americans isn't always a more effective solution than other methods of assistance. Each situation is different and it's naive to think that there is a single solution to help "Africa".
I don't claim to know well enough what's going on to endorse one policy over another except to say that we should almost definitely be doing more than we are. I can't go along with cutting aid unless that money gets replaced by some other form of assistance.

Personally, I think we should only send in butt-kicking torturing Americans into countries that nanny-state their poor and elderly as those fools have no idea how DANGEROUS their policies are!!!!
