Nice run, nerve.

I think I had a chance up to the final day, but I needed about five out of five things to go my way:

RBI: I had to pass GO, I was one behind
SB: I had to stay ahead of nerve, I was 1 ahead
K's: I had to pass nerve and Pancho, others had to pass nerve.
ERA: Had to stay in 1st, ahead by .01 or less
WHIP: 1.14, 1.15, 1.16, 1.16, 1.17, 1.19. It was tight.

Little of that happened. But, when you load up with waiver starters on the final day, you can't expect too much. I could have used one more starter, but they all got taken.......by the last place teams. Not sure what they were doing. As it turned out, nerve still would have won, but I could have come in 2nd with the extra K's, etc.
.............

It was a good day to be watching baseball. Probably, one of the best ever. With four games for the wildcards, and four more for 2nd place.
Plus the Rangers won, so my tickets to game 5 of the playoffs are still alive.

taken by the last place teams. Not sure what they were doing.

That would be everyone remaining as competitive as possible right up to the last game of the year. The kind of league I want to be in.

I took several pitchers myself the last few days--I was way behind on IP and saw no reason to tank the season just because I was in last place and had no real chance to move up.

I don't care what place I am in I am playing to the end. One of the positives about this league.

Nerve

How did you manage to fit that many closers into a roster with so few slots? Didn't that cost you wasted AB's? I just cannot get anywhere near filling the AB opportunities.
  • I only had three closers and they were real ones, not in waiting
  • I only carried one extra pitcher ever and unfortunately dropped one two weeks too early for extra batters
  • I had a first baseman who practically played all 162 games so I carried no spare 1B eligible
  • I carried no spare catcher
And even with several extra OF's, a spare middle infielder or two I could not come closer than within 10 AB's of filling each one. How do you do it? I just cannot figure out how to cope with this tiny bench in this league. Just have guys who never get injured and are never given a day off I guess.

excepting the position of catcher, four of the top 5 finishers in this league this season maxed out their pitching and came within 10 games of maxing out every other position.

for me, i have traditionally avoided players with injury histories - that sure helps.

How did you manage to fit that many closers into a roster with so few slots?

It was only the last 6 weeks that I reached 6 closers, and that was only a day or two. Then I dropped Motte.

But even the 5 closers was only last part of season. Remeber I only started the year with Rivera and didn't even draft a closer.

As far as maxing out slots.

Cano played 158 Games

Adrian Gonzalez 159

Asdrubel Cabrera 147

Ellsbury 158

Then there are players with multiple position, Mark Reynolds 1b and 3b, Howie Kendrick 1b, 3b, of,

Then through out the year, every time there were "days off" I tried to pick up a batter here and there to fill slots and then drop them after the game.

Yes it's not a deep bench but I think if we had one more player the waiver wire would be extremely thin (As if it isn't already)

Baldwin you only made 31 moves all year, I made 155. That should tell you everything you need to know right there. But already I say too much.

So, you knew you were stuck in last, but wanted to increase your innings pitched for some reason? Snagging two starters on the final day prevented you from "tanking your season"? While you were doing that, I was trying to win the league the title.

And since those pitchers were free agents, nothing prevented you from picking them up yourself.

I picked those guys up at 10 pm (9pm your time, I believe). What were you waiting for? If you wanted to win the title and SP was important to you, you had plenty of opportunity to pick up some long before I logged on.

Honestly, by the time I got a chance to check the league page I thought all there would be was picked-over dregs. Took the two I could grab quickly, and that was that. That late at night, even if I cared that I was supposed to be letting the league leaders get all the talent, why would I think anyone who cared would have not already gotten who they wanted?

Yes, I was one of the teams that was loading up on pitching towards the end. I didn't think I was out of line. I was actually trying to surpass Nerve in wins and some others in "K"s, only problem is the pitchers available were "not good"

I think another reason I was trying to climb the through the ranks was because of the 1st rounder I traded Building 7 for Heyward. Bad move

Congratulations nerve.

The thing about Rotisserie leagues is even the dregs of the league can have an effect on the top players. Thats what keeps me coming back.

I cannot believe that anyone would be upset because managers are continuing to manage their teams through the last day of the season. Suggesting they give up at any point is unethical to me and giving up could actually lead to collusion.

I agree that everyone should play until the end, regardless of where they are in the standings.

The comment "even the dregs of the league can have an effect on the top players" sounds like (to me, anyway) a jab at the teams at the top- "Don't think you can peruse the free agents or waiver wire at your leisure because I'll snatch up all the last day starters just so you can't have them" (emphasis my own). But I may be the only person that thinks those things.

I intentionally didn't make a roster move until three days left in the season because I didn't want the guy I dropped to be claimed off waivers. It didn't make a difference where my team finished in the league; I dared any of you to wrest sixth place from me with weeks to go and had no challengers. But John Lackey maybe/coulda/but-probably-not might have helped someone by getting an extra K or two out of the bullpen in game 162.

Was it strategy, gamesmanship, or spite? It's more sportsman-like to call it strategy or gamesmanship, but it makes for better forum fodder to call it spite. Especially on a forum that tends to be as politically charged as the Political Forum. ; )

Aside- Whenever I see think about the word "spite," I picture Dustin Hoffman as Willy Loman in "Death of a Salesman" claiming Biff failed at a task just to spite him.

I can't think of anything short of a lopsided trade or giving up and not managing, that we should be criticizing a manager for. They are free to do anything legal both to further their team's ending standing or to favoring one team over another. Teams at the top selectively tilt the standings and what's good for the goose is good for those ganders further down the rankings.

The thing about Rotisserie leagues is even the dregs of the league can have an affect on the top players. Thats what keeps me coming back.

Hooray for spite!

Dregs
-the least valuable part of anything

Dixie Dregs
-are an American band formed in the 1970s. Their mostly instrumental music fuses jazz, southern rock, bluegrass and classical forms in an often unique style.

Spite
-a malicious, usually petty, desire to harm, annoy, frustrate, or humiliate another person; bitter ill will; malice.

Sprite
-is a transparent, lemon-lime flavored, caffeine free soft drink, produced by the Coca-Cola Company

I wasn't slamming anoybody other than myself and Obamas. I guess the point I was making was as low as we both will finish we still can affect the other members of the league, this may include but is not limited to players in 1st and 2nd place.

I don't know why I'm saying this because everybody knows this.

Now who's got Frank Cabrera and what do you want for him?

IDK why you would interpret it that way. I think you are reading too much into it. I had a bunch of innings left to play, I picked up starters the last couple or 3 days to try and use up those innings. I hoped to increase wins and K's while maintaining or lowering my ERA and WHIP (see double-edged sword)

I agree with Tree. (make a note of that)

Suggesting they give up at any point is unethical to me and giving up could actually lead to collusion.

I could send an e-mail to the top teams in the league asking if they would mind if I picked up a starter with a 4.43 ERA facing the Pirates on the road on a Monday evening.

Yeah, I remember getting kicked out of a league for doing my duty as an unfortunate manager and trading all my good players away. Hopefully those out of the running are not even remotely looked down on for trying to fill our Innings Pitched.

You could always expand the bench if you have a problem fighting for IP the last few days.

I am shocked we aren't getting patted on the back for not throwing the season even further to get top draft pick. Competing right up to the last day is commendable. Attaboy.

I had to wait until the Arizona game was over to see who I could get rid of. Plus I had to pick up a prospect before midnight. And I was not sure what categories to work on until late. When I checked it late, there were two starters left. One had an ERA of 8.00 and one had an ERA of 9.00. I picked the guy with the 8.00 ERA. The guy with the 9.00 ERA was one of the worst pitchers I have ever seen. 30 innings, 12 K's 12 homers. I needed one who could play RP, and those were all taken. So, I could only use 6 starters on the last day. I was looking at Batista, and he threw a shutout.

Now I have 4 tickets for game 7 vs. the Tigers.
In the first round, 3 of the 4 series went 5 games. I had tickets to the one that did not go 5 games.

An obligation prevents me from watching tonight's game "live," so of course they'll win. I missed last year's pennant clinching win against the Yankees, so it stands to reason I won't get to see this one, either.

But as long as the Rangers win, I'll be okay. I've made my peace. I don't think I can handle a game 7.

Despite what you might think, David Freese's price went down after tonight.

The rules of the auction are as follows:

1. This is an open bid auction. Post your offer here.

2. Non-serious bidding is encouraged. The bid I judge to be the most creative that is also the most "legitimate" offer will win.

3. You may bid more than once.

4. The auction ends 12:01 (RotoGuruTime) December 1, 2011.

5. The "creative" payoff must be in my possession the day before keepers are declared for the 2012 Poli Board Baseball season for the trade to be finalized.

The bidding begins with a package deal: (Your name here)'s 12th round draft pick and an expired coupon for $1.00 off the 3 piece chicken meal at Pollos Hermanos for David Freese and C1's 12th round pick.

The whole "bullpen phone confusion" was a cover. What LaRussa was doing on that phone was calling George Soros directly and yelling, "I KNOW what happened to WTC Building 7, I've got photos of the explosives! Either you get the Rothchilds' to have GW Bush throw this game or I'm going public!"

Just another chapter in conspiracy lore...

Seriously, between the Mavericks and the Rangers, we're talking nearly 80 seasons of abject futility. To think that both teams would become World Champions within 6 months of each other, that would have caused Texans' wee little heads to asplode! You're not ready.

The only bid for David Freese was from biliruben. Once a slightly used arch from a 3rd-tier midwest city is in my personal possession I will complete the deal. I can be reached for delivery options at c1nrb.91-at-gmail-dot-com

Please note: If I do not receive an arch by the day keepers are declared next season I will retain possession of David Freese. Lest anyone think I will simply release David Freese so he can be had for nothing, you are sorely mistaken. I will declare him a "keeper," dip him in pine tar, and pour a 55 gallon drum of liquid nitrogen over him as he sits on my bench. He will remain there for THE ENTIRE SEASON. Possibly FOR-EV-ER. I will freeze him out. Don't think I won't do it, either. I am committed to this course of action.

David Freese will not be allowed to just waltz away like Albert Pujols was in real-life. I demand restitution, reconstitution, repatriation, and repercussions. His stay on my team will not end prettily; I'll see to that. That is to say: In-season trades will be considered if this trade falls through.

Three issues I can think of off hand,

1) Strength, faster better muscle growth

2) Much faster recovery from certain injuries.

3) Better workouts, energy for work outs, energy throughout a long season.

You still have to have the degree of talent in the first place for any of this to matter. It just improves people who already have some proclivity to succeed.

There is probably a couple more I haven't thought of.

a riff off number one would be increased bat speed, which may or may not result in power, but could certainly increase batting average.
