Subject: Location for my new Tracks
Posted by: nerveclinic
- [4711362616] Wed, Jan 18, 2012, 08:29
So I decided rather then put it in the "new music" thread. I would start a separate thread as I complete my tracks.
These are all original tracks. The are all written on a Mac Book Pro using the program Reason.
Reason has self contained keyboards, drum machines, effects modules and a sequencer program.
The first track I posted in the new music thread was called Desert Fog and can be found here...

The newest track I have put on line is called Full Trunk which I wrote ver Christmas holidays back in the states.
Feel free to comment here or on the sound cloud page. With sound cloud you can even make a comment about an exact moment in a song by making a timeline comment.
The new song called Full Trunk can be found here...
Full Trunk link
The song is called full trunk because my mothers car trunk was so full of used books it weighed down the car and the bottom of the car scraped against the top of my sisters steep drive way.

If you do listen on the Sound Cloud Page and want to leave a comment that is always appreciated. I am going to be buying a paid subscription there shortly which in theory should start getting some traffic there.
All the songs I've published are on my soundcloud home page here
Nerveclinic's Soundcloud Page
If anyone likes a song well enough they want an mp3 copy, make a request and include your email and I will email to you, most files are less the 10 MB's
More coming down the pipe in the very near future but I took almost 3 weeks off from writing during summer holiday.
By the way song titles are working titles only, and have no relation to the song, most are inside jokes.

Cheers Zen.
I have just about finished with a sound cloud page for the Industrial band I was in circa 1984-1987? Four studio recorded tracks.
To put those dates in perspective, we used a Macintosh computer and they had only existed for about a year. also Nine Inch Nails formed n 1988 after we had already disbanded.
I will post the sound cloud link shortly.

As mentioned the new Sound Cloud page is now up and running for the Industrial band I was in, in the 1980's, Damage Report. It will not be everyones cup of tea but thought I would throw it out there.
Oh yeah, that's me on vocals.

that first track reminds of something between early Cult and Joy Division, especially the vocals. oddly, two singers named Ian.

Baldwin at that point in my life if someone told me my music was"disturbing" it would have been the highest of compliments. I was angry about war, about what we were doing in Central America, the El Salvadorian death squads, the nuns murdered by our Allies in Guatamala, the CIA running drugs for weapons for missiles for Iran...the list goes on. That's basically what you are hearing and there was a stage performance to match as I was a theatre Major in college and acted in plays all 4 years.
And yes I agree, it was disturbing. I have some live recordings and I have a difficult time today listening to some of the vocals.
Of course to a 20 something underground audience, it went over pretty well. We had good sized crowds considering the style was pretty intense.
Tree Joy Division has always been one of my favorite bands, I did not like the Cult at all, especially the vocals so that's odd.

I like JD too, and agree there's a similarity to Ian Curtis' approach to vocals. If I had to take a stab at some of the other influences for Damage Report, I'd probably guess early Ministry and Front 242... and (on a bit more of a lark here) maybe Art of Noise?
Anyway, thanks for sharing, Nerve. I haven't been exposed to a lot of mid-1980s industrial music but this takes me back to my discovery of that sound around 1990.

I was thinking maybe early New Order, which was similar, or course, to Joy Division and other groups of that sort. That is, for the vocals.

MITH
Never listened to Art of Noise, like AL Jourgenson (Singer for Ministry) hated early Ministry, loved post 1985 on so we had already been playing for 2 years by then.
Yep Loved Front 242
Early influences were more like Laibach, Cabaret Voltaire, Throbbing Gristle (Although I always thought Genesis' vocal just to much screaming), Coil, The Swans, Einstürzen de Neubauten, Joy Division, early New Order and Early Gary Numan etc...

Tree Joy Division has always been one of my favorite bands, I did not like the Cult at all, especially the vocals so that's odd.
Joy Division is one of those bands that i felt could have significantly changed the direction of music, had ian curtis not killed himself (of course, that would have meant no New Order, so who knows...)
listen to EARLY Cult...heck, even before the song "Sanctuary" (although i hear similarities there too..but back when they were called Southern Death Cult...
Einstürzen de Neubauten,
yea, i would have said this too...and Front 242.
i really loved the musical era from 1996 to about 2006. i saw so many bands across a spectrum of genres, and really played a role in my diverse musical tastes.

I actually preferred Einstergene, The Swans, and Laibach as they evolved into the 90's. Einstergene were amazing live even in later years as were/are Laibach.
Hated the song Sanctuary,,,especially the vocals.

the musical era from 1996 to about 2006
Funny I'd cite the preceding 15 years. Post punk/new wave, synth-pop, pre-gangsta hip hop, new ska, West Coast rock and grunge finally sticking an overdue fork in hair metal, the electronic revolution. I've long felt the deaths of Bradley Nowell and Richard Shannon Moon stunted the evolution of modern music, forcing the industry to continue promoting bands like Limp Bizkit and Korn, granting them a staying power they wouldn't have otherwise enjoyed and in my opinion didn't deserve.

i probably should go back to about 1991 on the aforementioned years.
and oddly, i agree. Cobain, Hoon, and Nowell died in consecutive years, and their deaths altered music. i feel fortunate i saw all three of their bands live in venues big and small, before they all passed.

I am 1980 to 1990 for the types of music MITH mentioned, but also just because that was When I was in my 20's. I was only referring to how the bands I mentioned evolved.
From 1994 on I only listened to techno, electro, jungle, German techno etc. it was a second musical revolution for me but it was mostly Europeans and USA clobbers who experienced it. I was going to Raves in 1995.

My Third Track of 2013.
I've adjusted levels 100 different times and it's time to let it go.
Very mellow track. I think it's quite cinematic, and emotional and as I mention on Soundcloud full of desperation.
As always if you like it leave comments on Soundcloud it's greatly appreciated (Although no one ever seems to.)

Cinematic is a very good description. It conjures some haunting, yet peaceful visuals. As I've mentioned prior, I'm not a big fan of the electronic percussion, and the beginning drum track seemed tinty and somewhat out of place with rest of the production. But at about the 2 minute mark, the track switched to more of a muted tom tom sound, which really worked well, and when the track came back with the, I'll call it hi hat snare at about 3 minutes, it worked well and added some nice dynamics.

Bout the 'tinty', yeah...that sound is fine in a supporting role in the background or filler but it's not pleasing enuff to be in the foreground.
Just me personally, I'd be working to customize every instrument until it was somehow surprising. Whether it was reverb or derezzed and dirtied up, unusual speed, fading...I am really demanding. I wanna be surprised and delighted continuously. But that's just me....way too easily bored.
...and of course there's the autodrum...and of course there's the obligatory thump...not speaking about these pieces specifically, but these are electronica's achilles heel for me. Don't use any instrument accessible without customizing would be first of a long list of do's and don'ts for me.

This is a pretty big request/imposition, but would you be willing to upload Phantom Wakes without the drumtrack in a separate soundcloud? I really think it would hold up great. Very nice either way.

I can take the drums out and send I to you as an mp3. I wouldn't want to use my limited space on soundcloud for that purpose.
As far as customizing sounds, every sound I use is tweaked and changed and altered from its original state. Then I spend almost as much time remixing the track as I do writing.
Some times I spend 3 hours a night tweaking sounds and that is just one night of dozens adjusting. It is very precise difficult work. It sounds fine in the studio, then on the car stereo you hear a problem, then headphones a new way. Etc. when you are only an amateur, not a producer it is very difficult fine tuning all the details.
As far as drums go, I am not a drummer, it's my weakest skill set, I don't really enjoy it but it's all me so I have to do it. My passion is the song writing itself separate from drums. Drums are a necessity not a passion/ skill.
I appreciate greatly constructive criticism, it keeps me thinking about my work .

Lost Decade is my favorite track of all I've heard so far. Feels more like a complete composition, with a wide array of textures and dynamics. Even like the drums!
My only critique would be to expand on the funky passage that comes in at 2:48.
The beginning has a "Theme from Shaft" kinda feel.

Pancho Thanks I am getting better and better on drums. I was always in bands where someone else was the drummer so I never learned it. But it does make the song more interesting and complete.
yeah 2:48 is fun but I kind of like it as a kind of icing on the cake rather then a main ingredient. I will do something like it bigger on another song.
