... if they let Soros buy the Nats.

"It's not necessarily smart business sense to have anybody who is so polarizing in the political world," Rep. John E. Sweeney (R-N.Y.) said. "That goes for anybody, but especially as it relates to Major League Baseball because it's one of the few businesses that get incredibly special treatment from Congress and the federal government."

Rep. Tom M. Davis III (R-Va.), who was a strong supporter of bringing a baseball team to Virginia, told Roll Call yesterday that "Major League Baseball understands the stakes" if Soros buys the team. "I don't think they want to get involved in a political fight."
---

Davis didn't return calls to his office, but spokesman Robert White said, "The point [Davis] was making was how it would look if Major League Baseball sells the hottest team in the market to a guy who spent more money than the gross domestic product of Colombia to legitimize drugs."

Wow.

I'm not shocked.

Next, maybe they'll step in and insist that Baker start instituting hard pitch counts for Prior and Wood, on the grounds that anyone subjecting talented young pitchers to that kind of abuse must be smoking dope. That would be great.

After that, maybe they'll insist on a replacing Mel as Yankee pitching coach, because his incompetence is threatening the dominance of a patriotic franchise that is important to NYCs recovery from 9/11.

Maybe later they'll insist that Vlad be traded to KC, because those freedom-hating Californians deserve him less than the good, patriotic Missourians.

I think we all know that any NYC promises re 9/11 is just lip service. Remember the $40 billion they promised?

Insisting they fire Mel is free, however! That we they can use the money to buy a gross of cruise missiles to fire at Tehran.

Denny Neagle 00 91 5.81 4.16

Nice to see evidence that corroborates my rantings about Stottlemyre's utter incompetence.

I'm waiting for you, bili, to list the other times, dozens of them, where Democrats threatened loss of anti-trust exemption (sometimes successfully getting new teams.)

I could list them myself, but I know you are a fair and unbiassed person, and a scientist as well, so will do it yourself.

Funny, I don't recall an example of meddling based on the owner or potential owner's political leanings. However, my memory isn't as good as yours, Toral, so I'm sure you will remind of these egregious daliances with baseball for political gain for a particular party.

Make sure to list only those reasons as silly as Rep. Davis' or else it doesn't count.

Toral - were any of those threats based on the sole reason of a Republican purchasing a team?

My point being, that the threats to exemption that I remember will all made with the primary purpose of the good of the game in mind. This is pure political nonsense.

IMHO it would be a huge boon to the game to have a marijuana leaf as the symbol of the Nats, and Donnie Doobie as their mascot! ;)

Think of the franchise and marketing possibilities!

Think of the huge profits from concessions!
