University of Connecticut College Republicans decided it would be a good idea to bring in some new viewpoints to foster a full debate of current issues that are in the spotlight. Unfortunately, this particular speaker did not, “measure up to our standards,” according to a college Republican spokesperson. The man known in his wrestling days as the Ultimate Warrior reportedly espoused views described as racist and homophobic.

i dont remember there actually being footage released until now. i remember the speech, and it probably got wider recognition on pro wrestling news sites as opposed to regular news.

he is completely nuts. his obvious brain damage is probably related to his massive steroid abuse in the 80s.

I thought I remember originally seeing it on my msn homepage... first thing that came up when I googled.

Careful, fellers. Don't give this guy too much publicity. The chairmanship of The President's Council on Physical Fitness and Sports is vacant.

This guy looks about as qualified as Brownie. Maybe more.

THE HARTFORD ADVOCATE

The Ultimate Warrior, like just about any professional wrestler, has been involved in his fair share of over-the-top moments. A voodoo curse was placed on him by Papa Shango, causing him to vomit profusely. Another rival wrestler, the Undertaker, once attacked him from behind and put him inside an airtight casket. On more than one occasion he fought his way out of a body bag. He even ripped up an Iraqi flag in the middle of the ring.

Although the Ultimate Warrior has long since retired from the world of professional wrestling (last appearing in the mid-1990s), he is far from finished producing outrageous moments. Now known only as Warrior, the former wrestler is a conservative speaker, making his way around the college circuit. And why not? Anyone whose career peaked while body-slamming Hulk Hogan at Wrestlemania VI is certainly qualified to speak to college students on liberalism's "abyss of moral relativity," right?

After a recent speaking engagement at UConn, it became clear that Warrior (which is his full legal name, by the way) does his politics the same way he did his wraslin' -- with intensity, with boldness and with little regard for anyone else.

On April 5, Warrior spoke to a capacity crowd at the Dodd Center on the UConn campus in Storrs. During that speech, many audience members, some intent on disrupting Warrior's speech, took offense at his comments, causing tempers on both sides to flare and voices to rise. The scene became so intense that a police officer, fearing things could get dangerous, called in reinforcements. A video of the speech and the mayhem that followed, filmed by UConn student Russ Passig (one of Warrior's most vocal opponents during and after the incident), was obtained by the Advocate .

A side from a kick-ass video introduction, consisting of kick-ass wrestling highlights, the first 44 minutes of Warrior's presentation were uneventful. He talked of rights and responsibilities, and his definition of conservatism: "preserving traditions that have worked throughout time, beginning with the simple idea that people need to think and provide for themselves."

Yes, things were fairly calm until Warrior described how liberal thinking has created an "abyss of moral relativity where everything is as legitimate as everything else.

"The broadest and most despicable illustration of this most destructive consequence of moral relativity," Warrior said, "is that barbarism, today, is as legitimate as civilization."

Warrior goes on to provide specific examples that, he thinks, illustrate his point. He laments that that "the bum is as legitimate as the businessman ... , that queers are as legitimate as heterosexuals..., that Kwanzaa is just as legitimate as Santa Claus and Christmas."

Some may find it easiest to summarize Warrior's opinion with an analogy: the bum is to the businessman as Kwanzaa is to Santa Claus.

Yet while the aforementioned remarks certainly angered many in the crowd, it wasn't until Warrior was asked to qualify his statement on the illegitimacy of homosexuality that folks got riled. His response: "because queering doesn't make the world work."

After this comment, the presentation was reduced to a shouting match, between audience members and the former holder of the WWF World and Intercontinental Championship belts. Warrior, constantly interrupted by angry audience members, became agitated.

At one point, he thrust his arms in the air, and told students to hold their questions until the end of the presentation. "Question and Answer! Question and Answer!," he yelled. Later, he told a male student who loudly disagreed with his views on homosexuality, "I can't hear you, you got to take that object out of your mouth."

During the question-and-answer period, Norm Moghtaderi argued with Warrior over his "queering doesn't make the world work" comment. As Moghtaderi -- who looks Middle Eastern but didn't describe himself that way -- walked past the front of the stage back to his seat, Warrior followed along side him, bowing and repeating, "Shalom, Shalom."

Realizing he had forgotten his hat, Moghtaderi walked back across the front of the stage and picked it up. Warrior made a remark, inaudible on the tape, that further inflamed the audience. Soon after Warrior's comments to Moghtaderi, a plain-clothed police officer addressed the increasingly hostile crowd. Maj. Sgt. Linda Killarney alerted everyone that she had called in uniformed officers and if hostilities rose anymore, the event would be ended. Soon after, the event ended peacefully without police involvement.

The UConn College Republicans, who were responsible for bringing Warrior to speak on campus, immediately began apologizing to the university community.

"He [Warrior] got agitated [by those disrupting his speech] and responded," said Heath Fahle, spokesman for the group, "and just said some things that were patently offensive to anybody that was listening, just over the top."

In addition to an apology to the entire school, the CRs have also been hand-delivering letters to any campus groups that may have been offended by Warrior's remarks.

Fahle said the group had hoped that a speaker like Warrior would help attract a broader base of students to the event.

"He's very provocative and very aggressive and definitely out of the wrestling mold, but he seemed like a decent guy. We thought he may appeal to more people than just political nerds," Fahle said.

In a statement, "From the Desk of Warrior," released by Warrior's communications director, the College Republicans are called spineless for having "collectively decided to bow down and beg forgiveness."

Many, but not all, of the students who were disruptive during Warrior's speech are part of Strike One, a group of students protesting UConn's ties to state institutions and private corporations that participate in the occupation of Iraq.

To some it seemed that Strike One members attended Warrior's speech specifically to disrupt him. Prior to the event, members were passing out fliers with excerpts from ultimatewarrior.com, Warrior's official website where his many posts are frequently politically incorrect.

Warrior's release on his website after the fact had pointed remarks for the "World Class Crew of Crybabies," who constantly disrupted the speech, mentioning Passig, Moghtaderi and Geoff Traugh, head of Strike One, by name .

The UConn College Republicans have called upon those that disrupted the speech to apologize.

Passig is in the process of filing a formal complaint with the University.

I remember that promo for Wrestlemania VI.

I'm just glad the Ultimate Warrior never showed us his "parts unknown".

As a kid he was one of my favorite wrestlers. He was just an ass kicking machine. JR talking about UW's interviews needing subtitles is the pot calling the kettle black. JR has an on air orgasm everytime there's a big moment and I can't make heads or tails of him sometime.

Vince McMahon had a great comment as well.

"Come on in where nightmares are the best part of my day." Outstanding.

UW was a great entertainer and if people saw his promos and then see what he's like in real life they shouldn't be too surprised.

You can't make this stuff up.

The following is from The Ultimate Warrior's official website at ultimatewarrior.com:

In the interest of full disclosure, I must tell you I have watched Brokeback Mountain no less than 45 times and I own the Limited Edition DVD, signed by Willie Nelson a short time after he wrote that queer cowboy song as a tribute to the courage of the producers and actors who broke such incredible creative ground when they made their agenda-less movie. Serious. Until I saw Bendover Brokeback, Braveheart was my favorite movie. But the love scenes of Brokeback sucked me right in and I had no choice but to give myself over to the passion of its wide open range, if you get my drift. Such courage this young man and his collaegues have. Reminds me of the courage of classic movie stars, where during the War they enlisted and flew bomber planes and fought on frontlines, then came back and picked up their lives and careers right where they left off, without anti-American sentiment, whining and complaining, or self-destructive self indulgence. I’m equally inspired.

Apparently, Leather Hedger had sleeping troubles and anxiety and dealt with terrible mood swings. So do soldiers but they don’t self-destructively f*** up their lives. In fact, they don’t sleep, handle anxiety and mood swings while dealing with whether or not they might at any moment lose their life. And they do this all the while they are dangerously protecting the freedom of others to f*** up their own. By the way, how many 28 (or older or younger) year old soldiers met their death yesterday? It’s not easy to find out. None of them made the headlines of any news.

By today’s standard, though, I do have to agree that he was a great father. Perhaps even greater then the father of the year, Hulk Hogan. After all, Leather Hedger did what it took to kill himself. His kid is without a father, yes, but the negative influence is now removed and his own child has the chance for a full recovery. Hogan, on the other hand, won’t go quite that far. He insists on sticking around to keep further ruining, and profiting off of, the parentally mismanaged lives of his own children.

It is sad and tragic….that we don’t demand attention be paid to greater things.

Based on the little I've read here, and knowing nothing about the guy, my guess is he is a latent homosexual.

His obsession with homosexuality and need to ridicule it in such extreme manner leads me to believe there is a little voice in the back of his head saying..."man I miss grabbing those sweaty boys, with the big bulging biceps, in those sexy little tights."

Well you get the idea.

His obsession and need to express his disapproval so vulgarly gives his deep dark secrets away.

The man is gay but he is fighting his instincts through these adolescent attacks.

Thats an interesting thought nerve.

He started out as a professional bodybuilder too I read based on self esteem issues as a kid. "Hellwig started training with weights when he was 11 years old and has described himself as "the small, insecure kid who wasn't into any sports."

I don't get it. He hates homosexuals so much that he hates Heath Ledger (who was straight, as far as I know) for accepting work on a film in which he played a gay character?

This from a guy who is semi-famous because of his work in pro wrestling?

good lord, i love pro wrestling.

and to think of all the gay-themed things that MITH left out, like the lesbian stalker Mickie James, like Adorable Adrian Adonis and his "Flower Shop", like Exotic Adrian Street, like the dress-wearing Vito, and the simple fact that wrestling crowds have come up with some enchanting chants like "Faggot, faggot" and "(insert wrestler's name here) takes it up the a$$, do dah, do dah".

and yep, i'm on the road tonight, posting from Ohio, after having just shot another event to a pretty packed, excited house.

actually, no, smart guy. but because there are aspects of something i don't like, doesn't mean i reject it entirely. for example, if my presidential candidate of choice was endorsed by a periodical i didn't care much for, i wouldn't change my candidate of choice for that reason alone.

i've taken issue with the homophobia in wrestling plenty of times, and one fairly popular wrestler used to refer to his opponenets in a feud as "faggots", and he would do it pretty regularly. i made it clear that it was offensive to me to whoever would listen.

i also learned that no matter how often something is explained - as i watched another wrestler explain to him why it's offensive - that some people just don't get it, which is in no way a reference to the poster in post #26...

and, FWIW, there have been gay-themed issues where the wrestlers were cheered, such as the very popular in the northeast indy wrestling scene Christopher Street Connection tag team (who are, without question, the most homosexual-based gimmick i have ever seen in wrestling, right down to the two of them kissing in the ring) and the infamous Billy and Chuck who's "Gay wedding" became such a momentary cultural cornerstone that it was covered briefly in the mainstream media.

Tree just out of curiosity, why do you "love" pro wrestling?

I watched it for maybe a year when I was 11 but then I turned 12.

I'm honestly curious not mocking You don't strike me as the typical wrestling fan.

Do you literally like it on a serious level or is it like a sort of comedic farce to you that is well done and therefore entertaining?

I should also mention I haven't watched it since I was 11 so I don't really no what the whole thing is about at this point.

I will say that photo MITH posted of the guys head stuffed in the other guys...shorts, is enough to steer me clear.

One funny note, a lot of this wrestling at least used to happen in Atlanta because of Turner where I grew up. A waitress told me once, that bar none, pro wrestlers are the best tippers...just a little piece of trivia I thought I would throw into an otherwise seedy thread.

That it is "a sort of comedic farce" is part of it and the physicality and athleticism is also entertaining.

I check out Rotoguru as part of my before work morning routine. I saw this thread was updated and I literally started smiling and wondering what the Warrior was up to now. What sort of hyjinx was he up to now?

I watched those videos. Maybe Vince McMahon could hire him on to do an in-ring political show at the midpoint of every Monday Night Raw up until the election. Then we could update this thread a lot more often.

I'm surprised the Warrior didn't have the courage in the ring to "take his shirt off and show us what he is".

Thank you Great One.

Does he not realize that Orlando Jordon is (in real life) bisexual?
Seems like that might impact his decision to have an actual match with him.

the only thing worse than Warrior in the ring is OLD Warrior in the ring.

he was blown up after throwing TWO punches, and he nearly fell over in exhaustion when doing the double clothesline.

but at least he still has the super ability to draw strength and power from poorly tightened ring ropes.
