Wondering what you guys thought of this local case.
Seems to me this is a matter of the letter of the law getting in the way of the spirit of the law. |

If the girl(s) had been 16 or 17, I could see your point. However, 14 is too young. Were it my daughter, I would have been pretty pissed. And then he did it again.
Sentences seems pretty fair to me.

bibA - I have 3 daughters and at the time I'd be pretty pissed and want the guys head on a platter. But they got married! They are husband and wife. As much as I'd want to beat the guy for ruining my 14 year old daughters life, I'd have to him credit for doing the right thing.
I agree with PD - letter of the law vs spirit of the law. In this particular case I think spirit should win.

Yeah, I have far less problem with this than Mary Kay LaTourneau doing 7 years.
Maybe I'm sexist and un-PC, and perhaps I'm unaware of vast number of victims and support groups for young males seduced by their hot teachers, but I think there is a distinct difference between the damage done to a young female and a young male in these cases.

I have roughly "contained in the tip of my pinky finger" sympathy here. It's fine to say "sure, they are married now" -- but perhaps a 14 year old girl would not have made the same decision if she wasn't knocked up and scared ****less at having her life completely ruined instead of possibly only mostly ruined.
Then, as bibA noted, he (probably, and definitely if you believe his plea) did it a second time. Was he going to marry her too?
I understand the "it's consensual" argument, and that's the part I have some sympathy for, but on the other hand, there's a reason we hold children to a different standard in pretty much every other field of human endeavor, and it's because the decision making process isn't quite fully formed yet.

Had that been my daughter he would not have made it to trial.

Well said.

Yeah, I have far less problem with this than Mary Kay LaTourneau doing 7 years.
the funny thing is that i'm just the opposite.
in this case, the guy went to jail only because they were unmarried? if they had been married, that suddenly makes it ok and more acceptable?!?! i have a huge problem with that aspect of it - they were both teenagers in this case, and quite frankly, 14 year old virgins are becoming less and less.
i haven't been in high school for 20+ years, and even back in the 80s, freshman (14 year olds) were sleeping with seniors (18 year olds).
meanwhile, Letourneau was a 34-year-old woman who had sex with a 12 year old boy. she practically got off scot-free with only 6 months in COUNTY JAIL, wasn't even required to register as a sex offender, and part of her probation was to avoid contact with the boy.
two weeks after her release from jail, she was caught having sex with the boy again. she had $6200 and her passport on her. odds are, she was fixin' to flee.
this time she got 7 1/2 years.

I think the fact that they married each other makes all the differences.
These laws are intended to prevent abuse. The fact that they married each other and continued to have children demonstrates the lack of abuse.

Ah, the TLB Thanksgiving dinner table...
Little Boy: Who is my father, where is he? Daughter: Your grandfather killed him. Please pass the yams.
Yeah, the Muslims are the violent ones, alright!
