Subject: Saturday Night's Main Event

YES!!!!

(I move that we add this to regular scoring when it starts.)

-------------------------------------------------
from WWE.com

Saturday Night’s Main Event is returning to NBC this March after a 13-year hiatus. In the mid-1980s through early 1990s, WWE fans would scour the television listings each month — making sure they didn’t miss the highly anticipated special that replaced network staple Saturday Night Live on occasion. When Jon Lovitz, Dennis Miller and Dana Carvey weren’t performing comedy sketches, WWE Superstars were squaring off in matches that often took on a pay-per-view feel.

Here are some of the most memorable moments from the original run of Saturday Night’s Main Event:

On Nov. 2, 1985, Hulk Hogan & Andre the Giant defeated King Kong Bundy & Big John Studd by disqualification in a match remembered for the size and stature of its participants.

On March 1, 1986, Hulk Hogan retained the WWE Championship against "Magnificent" Don Muraco via disqualification. But this match was infamous for King Kong Bundy’s interference and assault. In the end, Muraco and Bundy broke Hogan’s ribs.

On May 3, 1986, the British Bulldogs beat Iron Shiek & Nikolai Volkoff in a best two-of-three falls match for the World Tag Team Championship. This was indicative of the strength of the tag team division, which was often spotlighted on Saturday Night’s Main Event in multiple-fall battles.

On Jan. 3, 1987, Hulk Hogan battled “Mr. Wonderful” Paul Orndorff in a truly memorable Steel Cage Match for the WWE Championship. Both men scaled the cage and hit the floor simultaneously, causing immense controversy and the restart of the match.

On Oct. 3, 1987, Honky Tonk Man nearly did the unthinkable: strike Elizabeth with his signature guitar during a match against Randy “Macho Man” Savage. Honky was aiming for the head of Savage, but a loving Elizabeth jumped in the way. Ultimately, Honky shoved Elizabeth to the floor and proceeded to smash Savage. Elizabeth rushed to the back and emerged with none other than Hulk Hogan. It was the beginning of the force known as the MegaPowers

Are you kidding me? What about Hulk Hogan's first ever loss as a champion, to Andre The Giant, who promptly turned the belt over to Ted DiBiase and started the events that led up to the tournament at Wrestlemania IV? Might be one of the most significant matches in WWE (sic) history.

Cool!

I was at the 1st and last of the ones listed in Farn's post:

My brother and I were actually in the front row of that last one. To this day, I brag that I was in the front row "the night the Megapowers were formed."

Yup, people get really impressed by that.

I do have a copy of myself on the tube for the Megapowers show. It's in a box somewhere around here. Probably worth 6 figures on EBay. And that first one above---put my whole hand around Andre's thumb. True, I was young. But the dude had a huge thumb.

Wasn't the post megapowers match- Hogan vs Savage with Buster Douglas as special guest referee also a Sat. Night main event? Wasn't this memorable for many reasons?

A)Elizabeth I believe ended up with Hogan in the end, and Savage was now a heel.
B)The guest ref was supposed be Tyson, before the unthinkable happened in Japan.

the first SME I ever saw was Hogan/Savage vs. Twin Towers when Elizabeth got knocked down and Hogan carried her back which led to the backstage fight and eventually WM5.

WWE needs to release those old tapes from the archives too.

Oh man, I'd love to get a Supermarket Sweep of the WWE video vault....

I know we went off on a tangent in this thread... I believe we are scoring this though, right? I'd say its essentially a PPV (and should be scored using PPV scoring) - it just happens to be free.

1. Score SNME? Yes
2. Scored equal to a PPV or a Raw/SD? PPV

2. Raw/SD

If it's free, it isn't PAY per view

i am going to urge restraint, and see how this show pains out before we start rewarding points.

we need to see the nature of the show, what type of matches it has, etc etc, before we elevate it to the level of a Raw or Smackdown.

we never scored Velocity or Heat or whathaveyou, so why are we leaping to this? for all we know, it would have one or two matches, and that's it...

from Great One, via email:

My only question with this whole scoring thing is the motivation for scoring a PPV differently... essentially, with these votes we are saying that you get more points for PPV events because ---> you have to pay for it? I don't think that should really have anything to do with it.

I think we just lazily called it "PPV' points because thats typically the special event that is built up to - that occurs out of the norm of the usual two shows - (and isn't called SD or RAW with the same SD set, as the special did in the fall) - not because we pay for it or don't.

And there is no other PPV in March - so it essentially IS the March PPV.

I really don't care either way, but I don't think the decision should be based on whether its on free tv or not. I think thats irrelevant.

While I suppose caution could be exercised, I think there's going to be little doubt that WWE looks upon this as a BIG deal and comparisons between Heat/Velocity are wholly unfounded. Historically, SNME has been a major storyline creator (or advancing storylines) and with it being on NBC I doubt you're going to see London and Spanky vs. the Gymini as the main event. I would imagine some of the best of Raw/SD would be typical stuff for SNME.

wwe is the new wwf because when wwf was around rthere a gruop also called wwf(World Wildlife Foundation). so they went to court and wildlife foundation won so they to change there name to wcw the when monday night nitro came along shane machmon owned wcw so vince made anther wrestling show call wwe. then moday nigh nitro was over and wcw was finished.

I would love to watch, but I have plans that night to go out to dinner and to see the hot new movie "Snakes on a Plane" - sorry Boogey!

Good luck beating up Booker T this weekend. Its very important that you beat him up real bad.
