Huge news for ROH!

INTERNATIONAL WRESTLING PHENOMENON RING OF HONOR INKS STATESIDE TELEVISION DEALS

WITH iN DEMAND, TVN AND ECHOSTAR

PPV/VOD Distribution Deals Bring ROH into 50 Million Households

New York, May 3, 2007 - Ring Of Honor Wrestling (ROH), in association with G-Funk Sports & Entertainment, has concluded programming and distribution deals for PPV and VOD wrestling cards with iN DEMAND Networks, TVN and EchoStar Communications Corporation's DISH NetworkTM, making the critically-acclaimed ROH brand available for the first time ever to approximately 50 million American households. The agreement calls for a card every 60 days from shows both stateside and abroad, and will premiere July 1. A total of six cards are planned throughout ‘07/'08. ROH owner Cary Silkin made the announcement today with G-Funk's President Ken Gelman. The debut event, entitled "Respect Is Earned," will be taped May 12 in New York City from the Grand Ballroom of the Manhattan Center, and will feature a glistening array of talent from Japan, England, the U.S. and Mexico.

Long revered by a loyal underground fan base, the Philadelphia-based ROH—currently seen on Canadian, British and Japanese TV—appeals to the disenfranchised wrestling fan fed up with storylines which seem to take precedence over the kind of powerful ring competition that ROH specializes in. ROH, in fact, is seen to have the highest level of athleticism in its field today, which recently culminated in a sweep of the 2006 Wrestling Observer awards for "Most Outstanding Wrestler," "Best Brawler," "Best Major Wrestling Show" (ROH took four of its Top 10) and "Best Booker."

"Fans around the world now know that our brand of action is, indeed, the highest-flying, hardest-hitting most daring and acrobatic action presented today," says Mr. Silkin. "We are thrilled that we can finally show a televised audience what our crowds have known for the last six years…that ROH harkens back to an earlier era of wrestling where authenticity still counted for something. There's a magic at our shows that I, as a wrestling fan, had all but given up on."

G-Funk Sports and Entertainment will be handling all marketing and promotion for the wrestling programs, including creation and launch of an affiliate website on May 15, www.rohaffiliates.com, which will contain easy-to-implement marketing materials and all event information. Each show will also be supported by a range of targeted national consumer advertising and promotion.

According to Mr. Gelman, "Ring Of Honor already has the respect and enthusiastic following of legions of fans around the world through their live events, but represents a fresh new entry into the world of televised wrestling. These distinctive programs will prove a welcome change-of-pace for audiences and a popular new option for cable operators and satellite providers as they expand their transactional offerings."

Dish Network is reporting 19 buys of the Undeniable PPV. That can't be a good sign.

I know about 5 people (not the same) that have ordered all of them so far, but via InDemand on Comcast or whatever.
On a side note, I don't know 5 people that even have Dish Network lol... all Direct TV, Cablevision or Comcast in these parts.

PW Torch review of Austin Aries vs. Nigel McGuiness from the current PPV "Rising Above" now available on InDemand.

I don't have any adjectives to describe this match. You just can't put that level of quality pro wrestling action into words. In my review of ROH's fourth PPV, I said Nigel vs. Morishima was the best PPV match ROH has delivered. This match topped it. Nigel vs. Morishima from PPV #4 was one of the best 15-minute matches you'll ever see. Nigel vs. Aries went ten more minutes, which required a very difficult task of developing two or three "mini-matches" within the match, rather than just going non-stop for 15 minutes. I'll appreciate this match more because it shows what these two men are capable of in the ring. Even when there were slow spots to stretch it out 25 minutes, there was an overwhelming sense of anticipation for what was to come next. You don't find that in 90 percent of pro wrestling these days. (****3/4)

My second overall thought on Nigel vs. Aries is that this was a brutal match no matter how well they protected each other. I am concerned if Nigel suffered a legit concussion at 5:00, and then wrestled 20 more minutes in a debilitated state of mind. Yes, it would have been disappointing if the match was stopped, but a wrestler's health is always more important than the entertainment he is expected to generate.

Yeah, the fact that there was a spot only 5 minutes into the match that was unplanned - that sent Nigel head first into the guardrail, blood dripping down his face and woozy before they really even got going makes it all the more impressive.

I like this part of the review too cause it sums up guys like us - I didn't realize how early in the match the guardrail spot was, and boy did it look sick when Aries smashed Nigel in the back of the head, sending Nigel face-first into the edge of the guardrail. Gotta love the contrast of the male fan directly behind the guardrail having a good time being part of the action, while the female fan's jaw dropped and she looked very concerned. Nigel had a far-away look in his eyes, with a little embellishment, but he certainly gave the appearance of not having full control of his own body.

Oscar winner Marisa Tomei was at ROH events last night and Friday in Dover, NJ as part of the filming for "The Wrestler" with director Darren Aronofsky and actor Mickey Rourke. Tomei watched several matches both nights and seemed impressed. Aronofsky was thrilled with the reactions of the ROH fans.

I love Aronofsky's work, the guy is insane. Would have been cool to meet him. Tree, did you meet any of these folks?

Lance Storm commentary about ROH experience. An interesting read.

ROH: Gabe Sapolsky
April 21, 2008

This will be one of the last Promoter’s commentaries I write, as I’m down to the last few organizations I worked for during my career. After I left WWE and “retired” so to speak, I made a real effort to avoid accepting any more bookings, but the chance to work in ROH put an end to that. I was originally hoping my ECW One Night Stand match with Chris Jericho was going to be my last. I thought it would be cool if my first and last match were with the same guy, book ending my career. I still have hopes of one more Chris Jericho match somewhere down the line to still do this; perhaps I’ll promote a show in Ponoka, Alberta when we are both 50 so we can go full circle and finish where we started (LOL).

Anyway back to ROH. Gabe Sapolsky isn’t actually the promoter or owner of ROH, but he is the booker and the guy I deal with whenever I have anything to do with ROH. I first met Gabe way back in my ECW days. Gabe was actually the first guy to contact me about coming in to ECW. Gabe called me late one Friday night asking about my Japan dates, because Paul was interested in bringing me in. Once I started working for the company I got to know and like Gabe, so when he contacted me after I left WWE to see if I was interested in working any ROH dates, I at least heard him out before declining.

Gabe was persistent and eventually convinced me to come in and do an appearance at a show in conjunction with taping a shoot interview. We had already agreed to the shoot interview and Gabe insisted that if I came to a show and saw Bryan Danielson work I would be interested enough to accept the booking.

In December of 2005 I had my first ROH experience when I flew into NY City to attend their show and do the shoot interview. The experience was fantastic and I had a great time. Since I hadn’t yet agreed to work a match we decided I would just do an in ring promo, endorsing Bryan Danielson as the ROH Champ. We figured if I later agreed to work a match this would set the groundwork, and if not they still had me verbally putting over their Champion.

The show went great as did the Shoot Interview (Available on DVD from ROH) and I went home thinking that if I ever was going to do another match ROH would be were I wanted to do it. I was really on the fence after seeing the ROH product. I knew I would enjoy working for them and a match with Danielson would be awesome, but I still didn’t want to give up my last match with Jericho.

A month or so later I was contacted by 1PW in England about working a couple shows for them and instead of just turning them down I made a request I thought for sure they would pass on. In addition to the pay day I wanted, I asked for them to fly both me and my wife to England a week before the show so we could have a London vacation. My wife had always wanted to see England and this would be a way to do it for next to nothing (I’m a very cheap man). I wasn’t expecting them to agree but figured on the off chance they did, my wife would be thrilled and I would also then be able to accept the ROH booking since I was going to be giving up the ONS match as my last match.

1PW said yes, and I immediately contacted Gabe about setting up the match with Danielson. The April 1st 2006 WrestleMania weekend in Chicago worked out great for both of us, and my return match was on. Again I was treated unbelievably by both the office and the boys. I can’t say enough great things about the moral of the locker room and their conduct on the whole. Everyone was so respectful and welcoming I couldn’t believe. I felt as at home in the ROH locker room as I had during my ECW days, and you’ve no doubt heard me rave about my time there.

Gabe sent me a bunch of ROH DVDs so I could study Danielson’s work and I trained harder for that match than I had for any one specific match in my career. Being inactive for as long as I had I knew I was going to have to really push myself in order to be able to hang with the work rate standards of ROH.

Creatively this show was rewarding also. When I accepted the booking the one thing I said to Gabe was that I wanted to be allowed to do whatever finish Bryan and I decided on. I figured Gabe knew me well enough to trust me with this and he did after first pointing out the ROH “code” of no bullshit finishes. I think I actually laughed when he said this, asking him if he honestly thought I’d want any bullshit in my finish. He admitted not, but felt before giving an outsider creative control he was obligated to at least set the ground rules.

The match went great, (Also available on DVD from ROH. Look for “Better than our Best”) and to this day it is one of the matches I’m most proud of. Bryan and I gelled really well together and after years of having the creative and time restraints of WWE TV on me, it was such a joy to just hit the ring and wrestle. We planned very little ahead of time all things considering. We had all our near falls and I think one spot, and went to the ring with the intention of just working, and seeing what happened. To be honest we hadn’t even decided exactly what the finish was going to be when we headed to the ring.

We had debated all day about a pin fall or submission finish. I was all for putting him over clean with the submission finish but Bryan was worried the crowd might be disappointed to see me tap on the finish. We figured with this being my ROH debut and my in ring return I would be the strong baby face, so he was concerned about a flat finish. You have to love the professionalism of a guy who is more worried about the crowd reaction than getting his finish over. We figured we could just make the call out there, after we got a feel for the crowd. In addition to being one of my favourite matches it also ended up being one of my longest (approx. 27 minutes) and I believe the longest match I’d had in more than 10 years.

I could likely go one for another page or two talking about how much I enjoyed working for ROH, but I need to wrap this up and we still have to cover the money issue. There are actually a couple of interesting stories when it comes to getting paid by ROH. There was a screw up on my December appearance, because I figured I’d get paid after the shoot interview (the last thing we did) and Gabe expected me to be paid at the show. The guy who handles the pay cheques wasn’t at the shoot interview so once we wrapped everything up, I hadn’t been paid and there was no money to be found. Gabe must have apologized a dozen times and promised my cheque would be sent to me at home immediately. Perfect, “the cheque is in the mail”. I trusted Gabe and wasn’t concerned and true to his word my cheque was over nighted to me and I was paid in full.

For my return in April we had agreed on a price and Gabe had asked if they could run an autograph session to help counter balance my pay day and international plane ticket. I was getting what I wanted so I figured what the hell, but asked that if it ended up being a substantial money maker he give me a piece of it. I was intentionally vague about what “a piece” of it was, wanting to see how fair ROH would be. The autograph session was a huge success and ROH ended up being more than fair, with my “piece” of the action.

I cannot say enough good things about this company and how they treated me. The only reason I haven’t continued to work matches for them is that I feel it’s too hard to work at the level required by ROH on a part time basis. I take great pride in my work rate and there is no way I could keep up with that locker room just working the occasional show. Staying on top of my game and being in that kind of shape I would have to be in, to hang in ROH, is a fulltime job, and my fulltime days are behind me.

If you are a worker and get the chance to work for ROH, jump at it, and if you are a fan and have the chance to attend a ROH show, you need to jump at that too.

This Friday, May 30th, at 10pm will be the pay-per-view premiere of ROH "Take No Prisoners" on iN DEMAND, The DISH Network and TVN cable systems.
Due to the glut of PPVs, there are no good replay times on iN DEMAND except for this Saturday at 8pm if you have iN DEMAND 3 (the 3rd PPV channel). Don't miss what is sure to be one of the best PPVs of the year and catch the premiere on May 30th at 10pm. We have the entire lineup listed at the end of this ROHwrestling.com Newswire.

Here is what Sean Radican wrote at PWTorch.com after seeing an advance screening: "(9.0) This is a special show to me....This encounter (the main event World Title Match) will go down as a strong contender for MOTY (match of the year) when all is said and done, as I got goose bumps watching this match, which doesn't happen often for me when I'm watching wrestling....I highly recommend this show."

Ryan - what did you think of the show last night?

SICK spot with Roddy and Erick?

oh, and from Friday's show in CT, via the ROH message board.

Another note, while the three way spilled into the crowd in Section B, (Erick) Stevens was thrown into a section of four or five chairs, and Necro (Butcher) as usual threw chair after chair on to him, and then he took a crew member and threw him onto Stevens. Hilrious stuff. The crowd brawling was great, brutal chair shots right to the head, probably enjoyed it more then others cause it was literally a foot in front of me, but it was great stuff.

that security guy didn't know it was coming. as he was sailing through the air, he prayed he didn't go face first into the leg of a chair, and looked down to see Stevens with a "what the f*ck!?!?!?!" look on his face...

Steen & Generico vs. Motor City Machineguns at Hammerstein Ballroom on 8/2!!!
I am psyched for that.

Ya know, its funny that Rude says ROH does high school gyms... when in reality, TNA only gets 975 people at Webster Hall in NYC a few months ago... and ROH sells out 2000-2500 at the Hammerstein Ballroom. The same venue where WWE ran the ECW One Night Stand PPV's. I'd say they are doing pretty well.

Tree - got any connections for a couple good seats for my man Blue Hen and a guest? I think he's due for another show and this big event in August seems just about right. I am currently locked into my 3 third row balcony seats unless I can find an upgrade.

no way in hell did they do 975. i doubt there were 500 people there.

Either or... I don't think Hen would mind at all paying a few bucks for a solid balcony seat (Gregh?). But you also can't beat a freebie with a slightly worse view. We can set up a pre-show happy hour or something as well. Or are you really busy prior to showtime?

I'm just throwing it out there too for BH -- for all we know he'll be travelling in Iceland for the month of August or something.
Anyone else in NYC interested for 8/2? MITH maybe? Gurupie getogether and a good show?

let me here from BH before i reach out to the office and see what i can do.

ultimately, if people were serious, i could probably get a few extra seats on the floor, but yea, it wouldn't be free. i have some pull, but not that much pull.

am i busy before hand? yea, probably. especially since we're in Virginia the night before. then we hit hammerstein, and it's a big enough venue that i tend to be busy before and during the show.

but afterwards, screw making a train, let's go have some beers. Stout NYC is a common hang out, and they have beers, food, and damned pretty waitresses.

MITH? BH? anyone else from the NYC area?

last night was one of the best shows i've seen ROH run in manhattan, if not THE best. seeing the NWA World Title change hands was pretty amazing.

it was also historic, as it's the first time that belt has changed hands in NYC. considering that the title has been around for 60 years, that's pretty amazing.

RADICAN'S TAKETALES FROM THE PULPIT 9/23: Kevin Steen & El Generico produce rare genuine moment at ROH PPV taping in Boston Sep 23, 2008 - 2:12:19 PM

By Sean Radican, PWTorch Columnist

It's a very rare occasion when I witness a moment as genuine as I did this past Friday when I attended ROH's ninth PPV taping in Boston, Mass. I've been to a lot of live wrestling events and seen my fair share of fantastic matches live, but I think I'll always remember being there in person when Kevin Steen & El Generico finally captured the ROH World Tag Team Titles by beating Jimmy Jacobs & Tyler Black in an excellent MOTYC.

Steen & Generico's win was the culmination of over a year of frustration for the duo, who have some so close, so many times against a number of ROH World Tag Team Champions. First it was the Briscoes in 2007. Steen & Generico just couldn't beat them for the titles and their frustration grew. For a few months after their feud with the Briscoes concluded, the duo didn't accomplish month and were stagnant. Then they got back to what they do best and that was winning over the crowd with their charisma and ability.

They were the stars of WrestleMania weekend when ROH ran two shows in Orlando. In June, they made a dramatic run to the finals of the ROH World Tag Team Titles tournament, despite Kevin Steen being injured at the hands of Nigel McGuinness. I was there live that night as well and the crowd was so deflated when Jacobs & Black got the cheap win with a rollup out of nowhere that they threw trash at the ring.

Kevin Steen had promised to capture ROH gold in 2008 and when Steen & Generico were granted a title shot at the PPV taping in Boston, I thought it had the potential to be a special night, but I had no idea what I was in for. The match started off with Aries & Black getting the heat on Generico for a long period of time. Eventually the fans got on their feet and began rooting for El Generico. It was easy to see that Steen & Generico's quest to win the tag titles felt real to just about everyone in the building. The fans even starting singing Generico's theme song and when he finally tagged in Steen, everyone in attendance shouted "Ole!"

The heat was incredible for the duration of the match, which took many twists and turns. The crowd was deflated at certain points when Steen & Generico were seemingly on the verge of victory and something went wrong and either Black or Jacobs managed to escape doom. When Steen & Generico finally cleared the ring of Black and nailed Jacobs with their brainbuster/package piledriver finishing combination, the entire arena shook once the ref's hand touched the mat for the third and final count.

After the match, it felt like Steen & Generico had won a sporting championship of some sort. The fans jumped up and down and celebrated as the floor in the arena continued to shake. Steen and Generico went into the crowd with their titles and celebrated. It was clear nobody wanted to leave and the celebration lasted for several minutes.

I strongly urge people that haven't given ROH a chance in this past to order the PPV taped in Boston this past Friday when it airs in November. It's very rare when you see a moment as genuine as what I experienced in Boston this past weekend. It was also a fantastic example of one of the things ROH gets right so often and that is telling stories that people can believe in.

INTERNATIONAL WRESTLING PHENOMENON RING OF HONOR INKS PPV & VOD PACT WITH DIRECTV

First PPV Event to air on DIRECTV in early 2009

ROH Classics to be launched on DIRECTV on Demand platform

ROH programming now available in more than 80 MM HH

New York, November 20, 2008 - Ring Of Honor Wrestling (ROH), in association with G-Funk Sports & Entertainment, has concluded programming and distribution deals for PPV and VOD wrestling content with DIRECTV, making the critically-acclaimed ROH brand available for the first time ever to approximately 17.3 million additional American households. In total, ROH programming is now available in more than 80 million households throughout North America.

ROH owner Cary Silkin made the announcement today with G-Funk's President Ken Gelman. The debut event, entitled "Rising Above," will be taped November 22 in Chicago, Illinois from the Frontier Fieldhouse and will premiere on DIRECTV in early 2009.

For the first time, ROH will debut "ROH Classics" on DIRECTV on Demand in early 2009. Approximately ten-hours of classic wrestling programming content from the ROH vaults will appear monthly on the platform. The best matches, rivalries and stars in ROH history will be featured.

"This latest programming deal with DIRECTV marks another major step in our evolution as a wrestling company," said Mr. Silkin. "We're excited to bring our loyal fans more of the first-rate wrestling product they've come to know from ROH over the years, and to introduce our unique brand of wrestling to legions of new fans on the DIRECTV platform."

To date, ROH has premiered nine PPV titles since July 2007. In addition to DIRECTV, ROH currently has distribution deals with iN DEMAND, DISH Network and TVN in the U.S. and Viewer's Choice and Bell ExpressVu in Canada.

Long revered by a loyal underground fan base, the Philadelphia-based ROH appeals to the disenfranchised wrestling fan fed up with storylines that seem to take precedence over the kind of powerful ring competition that ROH specializes in. ROH, in fact, is seen to have the highest level of athleticism in its field today, as evidenced by the numerous awards ROH has had bestowed upon them.

G-Funk Sports and Entertainment will continue to handle all marketing and promotion for the wrestling programs, as it has since ROH's debut on PPV in 2007. PPV and ROH Classics marketing materials will remain available on ROH's affiliate website, www.rohwrestlingaffiliates.com including easy-to-implement marketing materials and all event and programming information. A range of targeted national consumer advertising and promotion will also support each event and program.

According to Mr. Gelman, "ROH programming has proven to be the best value in the PPV and VOD business for the better part of two years now. This latest deal with DIRECTV ensures that a greater number of rabid wrestling fans will enjoy ROH content well into 2009 and beyond."

ABOUT RING OF HONORRing of Honor Wrestling (ROH) based in Philadelphia, PA was conceived by passionate businessmen (and long-time wrestling fans) who felt the current professional wrestling product had strayed from the early roots of the sport to a travesty of wild story lines and improbable scenarios. ROH was created as a response to fans that appreciated the athleticism and entertainment that the sport can bring. The term "combat art" has also been used to describe ROH's unique style.

pretty this was the first PPV with the upgrade production work. there were some new cameras in use, camera angles, a gigantic camera boom (i think that's what its called), and so on.

there is a much more "professional" look to ROH with this PPV, and i urge you to check it out - you can see some of these improvements on the preview above.

Zyre - you see much of Spears in OVW? is he pretty good?
We are pleased to announce that the talented Shawn Spears will be on hand for a look in Manassas on June 12th. Spears is perhaps best known as "Gavin Spears" in WWE or for his incredible feud with Colt Cabana in Ohio Valley Wrestling. ROH officials have received countless recommendations on Spears, and look forward to seeing him in action in Manassas.
